Sporting News: Boise State Needs to Leave WAC

The Sporting News Blog has a post dedicated to the idea of Boise State leaving the WAC for greener and more competitive conference.

The Upset has predicted for the last year the imminent departure of Boise State to the Mountain West Conference.  When this transpires, the MWC will have four consistent Top 25 programs and a legitimate argument for invitation into automatic BCS territory.

The Other Idaho School

The football programs of Boise State and Idaho have been joined at the hip for nearly 4 decades.  Both were members of the Big Sky Conference.  Both schools made the jump to Division 1 in 1996.  Both are now members of the Western Athletic Conference. The two squads traded dominance in their rivalry over the past 40 years.  But for the last decade the success has been lopsided.  Since 2000 the Vandals have posted a 16-47 Conference record.  Their in-state rival, on the other hand, is 65-4 in conference, won a BCS Bowl game, and have the best winning percentage in Division 1 football over the past decade.  To add insult to injury, the Broncos have beaten the Vandals 10 straight times.  Thankfully 2009 might give the state of Idaho another football squad of prestige.

The Vandals opened 2009 with a dominating 21-6 win over conference foe New Mexico State.  Idaho traveled to Seattle in Week 2 and fell to the Huskies by a score of 42-23.  The score was closer than the experts imagined and word was spreading in Northern Idaho that Coach Robb Akey might have made a turn for success in Moscow.

Idaho defeated a rebuilding San Diego State team in Week 3 and followed that up with a great road victory over Northern Illinois on Saturday.  The Vandals are now 3-1 on the season.  The three wins in '09 match Coach Akey's combined win total from the previous two years combined.

Idaho plays host to MWC squad Colorado State at the Kibbie Dome on Saturday in what should be a great barometer for just how far the Vandals have progressed.  ESPNU has picked up the rights to broadcast the game, which airs at 8:30 p.m. MT.  With a favorable schedule the rest of the year (5 home games), Saturday's game in Moscow is certainly the "Game of the Decade" for the "Other Idaho School."

The Upset's Top 25

The Circus at New Mexico

Title link goes to ESPN's story by Graham Watson outlining New Mexico head coach Mike Locksley's rough start in Albuquerque.

With all that has transpired, The Upset is left wondering why Locksley still has a job.  The university should have no loyalty to the man, and he is clearly not bringing any good attention to the school in any way, shape, or form. The only issue might be contract buy-out, but The Upset wonders if UNM could terminate Locksley due to breach of contract in some way.  He was accused of sexual harassment and age discrimination before he even donned a headset on the Albuquerque sidelines.  The Lobos are off to an 0-4 start, 3 of those losses were at home, and one was an embarrassing loss to lowly New Mexico State.  And now, we have learned that Locksley went 'Tom Cable' on assistant J.B. Gerald.  In a conference with a history of classy and outstanding football coaches, Locksley doesn't fit.

Week 4 in Review

Week 4 saw some slight redemption for the Mountain West, more wins from the Land of Potatoes, and another agonizing loss from the Valley.

The biggest story for the non-AQ's was the Horned Frogs of TCU pulling out a gritty 14-10 win in rain-soaked Death Valley against Clemson.  Senior QB Andy Dalton led the Frogs with a performance of 17-26 for 226 yards and 2 TD's through the air, and added 86 yards on 19 carries on the ground, as the Frogs defense held Clemson to only 117 yards in the second half.  TCU also stopped two fourth-quarter drives that Clemson took inside the TCU red-zone.  The win moves TCU's record in its last 10 road games vs. BCS opponents to 7-3.

Utah bounced back from an ugly game last week in Oregon and earned a comfortable 30-14 home win against Big East foe Louisville.  Utah jumped to a 20-0 halftime lead, as the Utes forced 2 first-half fumbles and also blocked a field goal early in the first quarter.  A week after QB Terrance Cain put up an awful 20-41 and 2 INT performance, he completed his first 8 passes and finished 17-22 for 202 yards and 2 TD's.  The only bad news for the Utes on Saturday was that after rushing for a TD in the first quarter, RB Matt Asiata left the game with an injured knee. After the game it was revealed that Asiata had torn his ACL and will be out for the rest of the season.   RB Eddie Wide filled in with 129 yards on 19 carries.

The state of Idaho finished Saturday with its two FBS teams sporting a 7-1 combined record.  Boise State rolled to an easy 49-14 in Bowling Green.  Kellen Moore was 17-21 for 247 yards and 2 TD's as the Broncos exploded for 29 points in the second quarter, and scored two more TD's early in the third to take a 43-0 lead before the Falcons could muster any points.  The Idaho Vandals also traveled to MAC territory and came away with a 34-31 win against Northern Illinois, who had won at Purdue the week before.  RB DeMaundray Woolridge rushed 19 times for 143 yards, and QB Nate Enderle tossed for 270 yards and 3 TD's.  At 3-1, the Vandals are off to their best start since 1994, and may be able to earn their 2nd-ever bowl appearance since winning the Humanitarian Bowl in 1998.

Fresno State did what it does best, traveling to defending Big East champion Cincinnati, playing tough, and losing.  The Upset continues to admire the Bulldogs for their heralded "anyone, anywhere, any time" scheduling, and realizes how tough Fresno always plays in these games.  But the heart-wrenching losses to Wisconsin (twice), USC, Texas A&M, Oregon (twice), and now Cincinnati have to take a toll on the Valley faithful.  At some point, one would expect them to break through and start winning these games, but the result is always continued respect for Pat Hill, tough scheduling, and a tough team ... and close losses.

MWC and WAC sign deal with Poinsettia Bowl

The Mountain West extends its contract with the Poinsettia Bowl through 2013, and the bowl will continue to get the second pick of MWC teams.  The bowl will also get the third pick of WAC teams in years 2011 and 2012, and the WAC will also be the backup in 2010 and 2013 if neither Navy or Army are bowl eligible.

The Upset has little left to say on this matter.  If the Mountain West wants more respect, they should be working for better bowl deals.  The opportunity was there in this season's negotiations, and Craig Thompson has blown it.

Death Valley Defensive Duel

TCU @ Clemson will pit 2 Top 20 Defenses...in a driving rain storm...That is the definition of smashmouth football.

Wyoming Makes QB Change

True Freshman Austyn Carta-Samuels had been handed the reigns to the Wyoming Cowboy Offense for Saturday's Conference opener against UNLV.

BYU, Utah Kill MWC Momentum

During last Saturday's broadcast of College Gameday on ESPN, BYU was featured in a lengthy segment regarding the programs upset win of Oklahoma and their new #7 national ranking.  Later on in the show, Lee Corso picked the Cougars to roll the Seminoles of Florida State by three touchdowns.  His counterpart Kirk Herbstreit, who had the Cougars at #5 in his latest poll, echoed the same sentiment: BYU wins comfortably.  Throughout the week, and for nearly a year straight, the Mountain West Conference was the darling of the pigskin world.  Utah had shocked Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, and BYU had upset the #3 ranked Sooners on national TV.  Old theories of MWC incompetence and BCS arrogance seemed to be dissapating.  The MWC was finally gaining traction in the slant of news stories and it looked like the MWC was on the verge of gaining legitimacy.  Not only in the Mountain Time Zone, but the nation in general.  And then the Saturday slate of games commenced.

Seventeeth-ranked Utah, riding the nation's longest winning streak, travelled to Eugene and the hostile confines of Autzen Stadium to take on the Oregon Ducks.  The quackers had been humiliated Week 1 in Boise, where they were unable to garner a 1st Down until late in the 3rd Quarter.  Although the Vegas line had the Ducks favored by 5, the Utes had a great chance to further prove the Mountain West's credibility vs. BCS opponents and win a game on the road in a tough environment.  The Ducks returned a punt for TD following Utah's first possession and the game became more frustrating as time commenced.  Oregon seemingly gave Utah countless opportunites to win the ballgame.  Fumbles, muffed punts, and a blocked punt gave Utah a win in the turnover margin...and seemingly the ball game in general.  But Utah QB Terrence Cain threw two 4th Quarter interceptions and the Utes had 3 chances inside the Oregon 30 that resulted in 0 points.  Disappointing indeed.

In the late matchup the Seventh-ranked Cougars were hosting ACC power Florida State.  BYU, who had defeated #3 Oklahoma and destroyed Tulane in the previous two weeks was riding a wave of national credibility and respect.  The Cougars also had the nation's longest home winning streak.  BYU believers (like The Upset) didnt see Florida State's speed and athleticism as a problem.  How could it be?  BYU had just beaten one of the most physically talented squads in America just two weeks earlier.  As the game began Florida State looked like the high ranked squad.  The Seminoles were 7 of 7 on 3rd Down in the First Half and dominated the BYU defense in every facet of the game.  The game began to get out of hand in the 3rd Quarter as the maligned Seminole D finally made a play to disrupt Max Hall's rythym...in the form of a pick 6 that by all accounts was the dagger in the Cougars heart.  The destruction ended at 54-28..but those who watched the game know it was not that close.

And just like that... the air in the balloon of the Mountain West Conference was gone.

The Mountain West Conference had a wonderful opportunity to move the to an even higher plane of respectability.  Is it possbile that all the respect and admiration the MWC had been gaining the past years could be wiped away on just one September Saturday?  The Upset doesnt feel the cause is lost.  Though the two high-profile losses...and a combined 3-8 record against BCS opponents to date isn't pushing the envelope the way envisioned...there is still a season to be finished.  TCU is ranked in the Top 15 and has a great non-conference game @ Clemson this weekend to buoy the MWC up from last weeks catasprophe.

Week 3 Predictions

Last week: 12-3

Overall: 23-7

The Good:  The Upset foresaw TCU, BYU, and Tulsa rolling
The Bad: Fresno State and Air Force both gave away games that were definitely theirs for the taking.

The Picks:

Boise State (-8) @ Fresno State   The Bulldogs have what it takes to upset the Broncos, but Boise will be the better team tonight.  Even though Fresno garners respect for scheduling tough, Boise has still been a more consistent winner.  Boise State 31-21

Utah State @ Texas A&M (-19.5)   In a battle of the Aggies, Utah State will simply not have enough size and speed. Texas A&M 42-13

Nicholls State @ Louisiana Tech   Louisiana Tech 38-7

UTEP (-13.5) @ New Mexico State   WAC defector UTEP picks up their first win as the Aggies continue to struggle after squeaking by Prairie View A&M.  UTEP 27-10

San Jose State @ Stanford (-17)   San Jose State’s bowl hopes spiral downward after scheduling a tough first three.  Stanford 31-14

A few MWC vs. WAC battles:

Nevada (-3) @ Colorado State   Vegas gives Nevada three even though they were shellacked in South Bend.  Colorado State needs another win after escaping Weber State. Colorado State 21-20

San Diego State (-3) @ Idaho   Two teams that have struggled, both are 1-1.  But SDSU’s game against UCLA was more impressive than Idaho’s vs. Washington.
San Diego St 31-17.

Hawaii @ UNLV (-7)   UNLV shows up strong after letting game against Oregon State slip away.  UNLV 38-28

Utah @ Oregon (-5)   Utah’s success will depend on whether Matt Asiata can go, currently questionable.  A Ute win huge for the MWC.  Utah 24-21

Wyoming @ Colorado (-6.5)   Dan “Division 1” Hawkins holds off the mob as Colorado simply won’t lose 2 games at home to MWC teams.  Colorado 23-14

Florida State @ BYU (-8)   Florida State has given up 12 pass plays of 20+ yards.  BYU has given up one touchdown this season.  The Cougars show that they are a legitimate top-10 team, fueled by their first home game of the season.  BYU 34-17

Texas State @ TCU   TCU 38-0

Air Force (-17) @ New Mexico   New Mexico is still trying to find its bearings after beatdowns from Texas A&M and Tulsa.  Air Force is the superior team. Air Force 34-17

A detailed breakdown of Florida State vs. BYU

If you have some extra time, click the title-link to take a look at a detailed preview of Florida State vs. BYU, from a Seminole blog.

Sentiment around the Cougars is that BYU should be able to handle the Florida State team that has struggled with discipline, given up 12 pass plays of 20+ yards in only 2 games, and gave up a passing line of 14-18 for 285 yds and 2 TD's against Miami on first down plays.  However, this breakdown shows how Florida State might be able to beat the Cougars in Provo.

Scram, Big East! The MWC Deserves Automatic Berth

The BCS is an unfair, monopolistic, money-driven system with a million flaws. But here’s a new one that’s coming to a head this season.

The Big East has no business being included in the BCS while the Mountain West Conference is excluded.

WEEK 3 Lines

The Vegas Oddsmakers released their Opening Lines for Week 3 of the College Football Season.
  • Boise State (-7) @ Fresno State - What looks to be the de facto WAC Title Game in Week 3 should be the Broncos toughest test of the season.
  • Wyoming @ Colorado (-7) - Both defenses are coming off horrendous 2nd half performances that led to big losses...Dan "Division 1" Hawkins seat would be Dante's Inferno were the Buffs not to defeat the Pokes.
  • Florida State @ BYU (-7) - FSU and BYU could not have had more different Week 2's. The Cougars rolled to a 51 point win on the road against Tulane...while the Seminoles needed 4th quarter heroics to defeat middling FCS squad Jacksonville State at home.  The Upset thinks this spread might be a little low...
  • Utah @ Oregon (-4) - The outrage line of the season to date.  A top-20 team as an underdog against an unranked one?  I know it's Autzen...but the Ducks were handily defeated by Boise State in Week 1 and escaped a rebuilding Purdue squad on Saturday with a late TD drive.  The Utes will be carrying the banner for the MWC and respectability once again.
  • San Diego State (-3.5) @ Idaho - This should be an interesting game.  Who has made the most headway from last years disasters?
  • Nevada (-3) @ Colorado State - How are the Wolfpack the favorite when they were totally demolished 35-0 in Week 1? CSU is 2-0 with wins over Colorado and Weber State.  Strange.
  • Utah State @ Texas A&M (-17.5) - Are the Aggies of Utah State going to have enough to cover against the Aggies of Texas A&M?  New Mexico lost at Kyle Field by 5 touchdowns.
  • Air Force (-17) @ New Mexico - The Lobos have looked just awful in the first two games of the season.  Air Force should cover.
  • San Jose State @ Stanford (-17.5) - Tough stretch for the Spartans should end as it began.
  • UTEP (-13.5) @ New Mexico State - The Aggies BARELY beat Prarie View A&M (As predicted by The Upset) Long season ahead in Las Cruces.
  • Hawaii @ UNLV (-7) - The Rebels will try to shake off that tough, tough loss to the Beavers.  While the Warriors look to move to 3-0

Two key non-AQ upsets fall short; TCU, Hawaii win

The two upsets for the non-AQ west were unfortunately not extremely impressive as TCU and Hawaii beat a pair of pretty awful teams in Virginia and Washington State, respectively.  Although give the two schools credit for coming up with both wins on the road.

In as many games in the past 2 years, Fresno State lost to Wisconsin again.  After beating the Badgers two years ago in Madison, Fresno has fallen short the last two years.  Not to throw anyone under the bus, but Ryan Colburn had his receiver wide open for the go-ahead TD in the second OT, but for some reason in both OT's, The Upset noticed Colburn had a tendency to put way too much air under the ball.  His underthrow that led to an easy interception for Wisconsin was ... well, bad.

In the late, late game, UNLV fell short against Oregon State 23-21, in a game that would have added to the increased respect the MWC is gaining, as the Beavers are on the outskirts of the top 25.  The Rebels trailed 20-7 at the beginning of the 4th Quarter.  But backup QB Mike Clausen led UNLV on two touchdown drives to take a 21-20 lead with just under 3 minutes remaining.  Oregon State, who had struggled throwing the ball all night was forced into a hurry up pace.  After a big sack by UNLV LB Beauchamp, it was 3rd 26 from deep inside OSU territory.  Then...it all slipped away.  A pass interference call and a miraculous catch by an OSU receiver brought the Beavers to within striking distance, where their much maligned FG kicker put it between the uprights.  The Upset feels sorry for UNLV Coach Mike Sanford who seems to be a generally good guy who just can't catch a break.

AP & Coaches Poll: Week 3

The AP and Coaches Poll from Week 3 were released this Afternoon.  BYU and Boise State are both in the AP Top 10.  Two Non-AQ teams in the Top 10 last transpired in the Final AP Poll of 2008. (Utah and TCU)  BYU leap frogged the Broncos in the Coaches Poll after their convincing 54-3 victory over Tulane on Saturday.

Week 2 Predictions

The Upset had a relatively good week of predicition on Kickoff Weekend.

LAST WEEK:  11-4

THE GOOD:  The Upset forsaw Boise State upending Oregon...BYU and Colorado State covering the spread (Not winning sadly)..and the rest of the games going pretty much as advertised.

THE BAD:  Nevada, New Mexico, and San Jose State were about as bad anyone could have imagined.

THE PICKS:

Air Force @ Minnesota (-3) The Academy rushed for nearly 500 yards against Nichols State in the opener.  Dont think that will be done against a Big 10 team....but the Gophers struggled last week in squeaking by Syracuse...The Falcons have a great chance for the mild upset. Air Force 31-23

#2 Texas (-32) @ Wyoming  Some have dubbed this matchup the biggest game in Wyoming history...that case might be better made if the Pokes actually had a shot at pulling off the upset.  Colt McCoy should have a field day with a secondary that has struggled against accurate passing offenses. Longhorns roll. Texas 51-17

#9 BYU (-17.5) @ Tulane  The Cougars are coming off what some believe is the greatest win in school history...Tulane is coming off a 37-13 drubbing by unranked Tulsa.  Things are not going to get easier for the Green Wave this week.  Dont expect BYU to be looking ahead to FSU after last season disappointment.  BYU 37-7

#16 TCU (-11) @ Virginia  The only team in the Mountain West yet to take the field, the Frogs look to win another non-conference road game against a BCS opponent.  Virginia lost last weekend at home to an FCS Squad souring what would have been a great win for the MWC.  TCU 27-10

Oregon State (-7) @ UNLV   Mike Sanford has a chance to show to just how far his program has come on Saturday night in Sin City.  The Beavers come in with a vaunted rushing attack that might be too much for the Rebel front seven to handle.  OREGON STATE 31-23

Tulsa (-17) @ New Mexico  The Lobos were totally outmatched in Week 1 at Texas A&M.  The Lobos were also outclassed last season at Tulsa.  This looks to be a tough opening season for New Mexico and their new coaching staff.  The Upset likes the Golden Hurricane's Offensive schemes.  TULSA 49-13

#17 Utah (-13.5) @ San Jose State The Utes are continuing to break in a new offense under Offensive Coordinator Dave Schramm.  Terrence Cain look more than capable Week 1 and Matt Asiata was the work horse the Utes need between the trenches.  The Spartan rush defense look confused against SC.  Utah 38-10

Weber State @ Colorado State  The Rams traveled to Boulder last week and scored an impressive win over Big XII Colorado.  Look for Steve Fairchild to have his players ready for a Weber State team who lost a relatively close game in Laramie last week.  The Rams wear down the Weber D.  Colorado State  35-17

Southern Utah @ San Diego State  SAN DIEGO STATE 35-7

Fresno State @ Wisconsin (-7)  The last time these two teams met in Madison the Bulldogs were victorious.  In last years matchup the Badgers defeated Fresno State on the West Coast on the back of 3 missed Bulldog FG's.  Fresno returns 18 starters from last season and they are bent on retribution.  FRESNO STATE 24-20

Idaho @ Washington (-21)  The Vandals are fresh off their first road win in over 3 years.  The Huskies did not win a game last season.  Those two signs should point to a chance for the Vandals to steal one in Seattle.  It is just not going to happen.  Steve Sarkisian has fused a sense of urgency in the U-Dub program...which almost carried over to a win against a ranked SEC Team last week.  WASHINGTON 38-6

Louisiana Tech @ Navy (-7)  The Midshippmen were the talk of the college football afternoon on Saturday with their inspired performance in the Horseshoe v. Ohio State.  In fact, they were one BAD play call away from sending that game into OT.  This weeks matchup against a LA Tech team who struggled on the road @ Auburn should turn out a little better.   NAVY 30-20

Hawaii (-2) @ Washington State  You know that football is down in Pullman when the Cougars are home underdogs to a mid-major fresh off a shockingly close call at home against an FCS opponent 3000 miles away from home.  That is precisely what Washington State faces this week.  This one has a chance to be the dumpster fire of the college football weekend.  WASHINGTON STATE 11-5

Miami OH @ Boise State (-37)  Lost in PunchGate was the fact that Boise State was less than convincing in their efforts against a sub par Oregon squad.  The Broncos had countless chances to put Oregon away in the 2nd half...and couldnt do it.  Good thing this game is in the friendly confines of the Smurf.  BOISE STATE 37-12

Prarie View A&M @ New Mexico State (NO LINE)  If DeWayne Walker manages to lose this one...it might be a LONG, LONG year.  NEW MEXICO STATE 14-13

Keep Your Bags Packed 'Dawgs

The Fresno Bee takes a look at the unique scheduling of the Fresno State football squad.  Per the article, the Bulldogs will travel an astounding 13,303 miles during the 2009 season.  Wow.  The Upset continues to be a big fan of Pat Hill and the program he has built in the San Jaoquin Valley.  The Bulldogs have a non-conference schedule that includes games @ Wisconsin, @ Cincinnati, and @ Illinois.  Impressive.

Fresno State Football: Anytime. Anywhere.

Pat Hill's has certainly changed the Fresno State program since he became the head coach nearly 12 years ago.  He has stated many times that his Bulldogs will travel to any place in the country to face any opponent.  And Fresno has backed up the talk.  The Bulldogs have more wins over BCS schools this decade than any other Non-AQ school.  This year is not different.  Following their 51-0 thrashing of Cal-Davis, the Bulldogs take their show to Madison to take on the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday.

Fresno and Wisconsin met last season on the West Coast as two ranked squads.  The Badgers escaped with 13-10 win on the back of three missed Bulldog field goals.  Fresno State returns 18 starters from last years Bowl team and have a great shot at competing with Boise State for the WAC Championship.  The Badgers also escaped last week with a 28-20 victory over Northern Illinois of the MAC.  Saturday's matchup will surely test the Badgers more so than last weekend.

It looked as though Fresno State was being very coy about their Offensive sets during Saturday's game.  They only attempted 13 passes.  They were able to gash the UC-Davis line for over 300 yards on the ground.  The Bulldogs also bring back all 4 of their leading rushers from last season.  The Upset believes the Bulldogs have a great chance at covering the spread (-7) on Saturday afternoon in Madison.  And if past precedence can be gauged...the Bulldogs just might win for the second time in Madison in as many chances.

MWC Week 2 Preview

Here is a quick rundown of the Week 2 Schedule.  Six of the games will be on National TV.  Another great opportunity for the MWC as it inches closer and closer to respectability.  The MWC was 2-2 against BCS Conferences last week.
  • #2 Texas (-33.5) @ Wyoming   1:30 VERSUS - - Head Coach Dave Christensen has his hands full in Week 2 as Colt McCoy and Longhorns make the journey to Laramie.  The Pokes struggled to find the endzone despite countless chances against FCS Weber State.  And word out of Wyoming is that Christensen isn't happy about his Quarterback play and they will be playing mulitple QB's on Saturday.  The Longhorns on the other hand come into War Memorial as the nations 2nd ranked team and Heisman Trophy runner-up Colt McCoy would not be keen on allowing the MWC to move its win streak to 3 against the Big 12.  The nearly 5 TD spread should indicate the chances of that actually occuring.
  • #9 BYU (17.5) @ Tulane  1:30 ESPN2 - - Fresh off their stunning 14-13 win over #3 Oklahoma the BYU Cougars make their second trip to the Central Time Zone is as many weeks.  But the trip to New Orleans couldn't be any different on so many levels.  BYU, which was a 23 point underdog to Oklahoma, is now favored by nearly three touchdowns itself.  The raucus OU crowd will be replaced with a speckle of fans in the Superdome on Saturday.  The announced attendance for Tulane-Tulsa from last week was over 20,000...but to anyone who actually watched the game...that number should be divided by 10. Literally.  The question is: Can BYU avoid a trap game, keep their Top 10 ranking and prepare for Florida State the next week?
  • #16 TCU (-11) @ Virginia  1:30  ESPNU - - TCU was the only MWC squad who didnt play last week.  The Horned Frogs were dubbed the Preseason Favorite in the MWC but had to deal with the immense press taken by BYU following their upset of Oklahoma.  If The Upset knows Coach Gary Patterson, the Frogs should be chomping at the bit to play some football.  This is a great chance for the MWC to make yet another statement to the BCS.  The ACC stuggled mightily last week with two of its members, Virginia included, losing to FCS opponents.  Look for TCU to make a statement.
  • Weber State @ Colorado State (NO LINE)  3:00 - - Colorado State looked impressive in Boulder on Sunday Night in their defeat of in-state rival Colorado.  In his first collegiate start, QB Grant Stucker managed the game well and allowed the improved Ram defense to shut down the Colorado running game.  Weber State from the Big Sky Conference played Wyoming relatively tough in Laramie last week...and Colorado State nearly lost to Sacramento State last season in a similar matchup...The Rams, like BYU, needs to avoid a letdown after a big Non-Conference win over a BCS team.
  • Air Force @ Minnesota (-3.5)   5:00  Big Ten - - No one knows what to expect from the Falcons following their first game of the season.  Sure they amassed nearly 500 yards rushing...but Nichols State is not exactly a great litmus test for the remainder of the season.  Minnesota escaped the Carrier Dome in Syracuse with a victory thanks to Greg Paulus' errant decision in OT.  The Falcons have historically struggled in Non-Conference games against BCS schools.  Look for that to change on Sat.
  • Tulsa (-17.5) @ New Mexico   6:00  mtn - - All signs point to another down week for Coach Mike and the new look Lobos.  They gave up 606 yards of total offense last week in College Station.  They are playing a Tulsa team that destroyed Tulane last week by three touchdowns.  The same Tulsa squad that put...you guessed it...606 yards of total offense on the Lobos last season.  Hopefully the home opener and a week under the belt will help the Lobos make it respectable.
  • Southern Utah @ San Diego State (NO LINE)   6:30 - - The Aztecs played a respectable game in Rose Bowl on Saturday jumping out to a 14-3 lead in the 2nd Quarter.  Hopefully for SDSU, they will be able to escape the horror of losing to a FCS squad last season.  Truth be told, Southern Utah is no Cal Poly.
  • #17 Utah (-13) @ San Jose State   8:30   ESPNU - - The nation's longest winning streak is on the line for the Utes in this MWC/WAC matchup.  Dave Schramm and the Spread Happy Ute offense was very effective in Terrence Cain's debut as signal caller.  Cain was 20 of 30 for 286 yards and 2 touchdowns in Utah's victory of Utah State.  The Aggies are an improved bunch and the Spartans were walloped by USC 56-3.  Utah should roll.
  • Oregon State (-7) @ UNLV  8:30  CBSC - - One of the under radar games from 2009 is the upstart UNLV Rebels and their underrated QB Omar Clayton will be hosting Oregon State in Vegas on Saturday's nightcap.  Mike Sanford, who has struggled during his time in the Desert, has a great chance to make a splash not only for the MWC but for his program.  UNLV beat two BCS schools last season and the MWC has been successful against the Pac-10 the last couple of years.

Not A Complete Success For Non AQ in Week 1

While the victories of BYU, Boise State, and Colorado State made for great fodder for those in the Non-AQ corner, the week was not a complete success. San Diego State, Nevada, New Mexico, Louisiana Tech, and San Jose State laid effectual eggs in their Non-Conference road match-ups.
  • Despite leading 14-3 early in the First Half, San Diego State was unable to garner any more offensive production against the Bruins of UCLA. The Upset will not be too critical of the Aztecs and their first year head coach Brady Hoke as the program has a long way to go before it can be competitive out of conference. Heck, the Aztecs went 2-10 last season and a 33-14 defeat by a PAC-10 team isnt that bad after all.
  • Nevada and San Jose State are a different story. The Wolfpack and the Spartans both qualified for Bowl games last season...they were outscored in Week One 91-3. OUCH.  Sure they played two Top 25 squads...but the 3rd and 4th best teams from the WAC should not have that kind of outcome.  It strengthens the case that the divide between Boise State and the rest of the league is growing.
  • Louisiana Tech and New Mexico traveled to hostile environments and didn't handle the trip well at all.  The Bulldogs were outclassed @ Auburn to the tune of 37-13.  Meanwhile the Lobos and first year head coach Mike Locksely were demolished in College Station by Texas A&M.  The teams averagged just over 225 yards of total offense.  And this coming with experienced QB's at the helm.
The Upset hopes that these programs can right themselves in the coming weeks.  The Non-AQ banner becomes more terrible to behold as more teams step up to the challenge of competing at a higher level.  The Mountain West needs teams like New Mexico and San Diego State to be more respectable when playing out of Conference.  And the WAC needs a second team to get excited about.

The Inexcusable AP Voter: WEEK 1

Beginning this week, and running through the remainder of the season, The Upset will team with Pollspeak.com to bring you the ridiculous and just plain stupid votes found in the AP Poll.

-- An astounding 14 AP Voters placed Oklahoma ahead of BYU in their most recent Poll!

The Voters are:
  • Teddy Feinberg of the Las Cruces Sun-News (OU #7 BYU #11)
  • John Clay of the Lexingon Herald-Leader (OU #9 BYU #12)
  • Angelique Chengelis of the Detroit News (OU #8 BYU #13)
  • Desmond Carter of the Hartford Courant (OU #11 BYU #13)
  • Wayne Denniston of the Logan Herald-Journal (OU #11 BYU #13)
  • Israel Gutirrez of the Miami Herald (OU #12 BYU #14)
  • Mike DiRocco of the Florida Times-Union (OU #9 BYU #14)
  • Paul Arnett of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin (OU #9 BYU #14)
  • Sal Interdonato of the Time Herald-Record (OU #11 BYU #14)
  • Travis Haney of the Charleston Post & Courier (OU #11 BYU #14)
  • Garland Gillen of WWL-TV Channel 4 (OU #12 BYU #15)
  • Jeff Gravely of WRAL-TV (OU #12 BYU #15)
  • Rick Kaipust of the Omaha World-Record (OU #9 BYU #15)
  • Ryan Finney of the Arizona Daily Star (OU #13 BYU #15)

The Upset wonders if these voters actually viewed a single portion of the game on Saturday. It would seem that they have allowed themselves to be influenced by the heavy media coverage of Sam Bradford's injury. Bradford did not play in the second half and it is impossible to know just how the game would have transpired with him as the Sooner's QB. But it is also impossible to apply voluntary amnesia to the events of the second half. BYU played Oklahoma as tough in the first half with Bradford as they did in the second without him. The inherent flaw of polling is there is no definition as to how voters should vote. It is purely subjective. But if there should be one basic guideline as to how a vote should be cast, the actual outcome of the game should be front and center!!

(Another flaw to the Bradford-injury-caused-BYU-win argument is that Bradford's injury was a direct result of BYU's play. He didn't get injured in practice or running out of the tunnel before the game. It happened during the course of the game against the team that was smacking them in the mouth ... so why should that be held against BYU? They knocked Bradford out in a fair, clean play.)

BYU Rockets Up Both Polls

Voters have rewarded BYU for their stunning upset of Oklahoma by moving them up 11 spots in the latest AP Top 25 released just minutes ago.

Non-AQ teams in the Top 25:
9. BYU
12. BOISE STATE

**UPDATE**

The USA Today Coaches Poll just came off the wire. BYU made an even bigger jump (12 spots) but had to come from the fringes of the Top 25 (24).

Non-AQ teams in the Top 25:

BYU v. Oklahoma REWIND Blog

A second viewing of the BYU-Oklahoma match up provided The Upset great insight into some of the game changing plays that led to BYU's improbable upset.

1st Quarter-
-- Oklahoma's 1st Possesion
-3 False Start Penalties and a 3 and Out

-- BYU's 1st Possession
- 2 3rd Down Conversions...Both 3rd & 4...Slant to Chambers and Run to Kariya
- BYU sets up for 41 yard FG...Coaches lose track of Play Clock...Ball snapped about a half of a second too late...FG is good...Points taken off of the scoreboard...Payne misses 46 yd FG

--Oklahoma takes over at the BYU 35 yard line following a muffed punt return by BYU WR McKay Jacobsen. The ball was tailing away from Jacobsen as he came closer and closer to the sideline. Tough break. At the time it felt like BYU had just made the mistake of all mistakes.

-- Oklahoma converts a 3rd & 12 as Bradford finds a receiver near the sideline for the First Down. 2 BYU Defenders fell down on the play. Even with a 35 yard field the BYU defense had a chance to stop the drive but failed to convert.

-- Bradford finds Broyels in the endzone on the very next play to take the lead.

OKLAHOMA 7 BYU O

--On BYU's next possession they begin to implement a silent count that seems to be allowing Max Hall to read the defensive pressure before the snap. BYU comes to line...set...and Hall will lift his leg to call for the snap. The ball is not snapped but Oklahoma continues to show blitz too early and allows Hall to complete a pass to Brian Kariya for 16 yards.

-- Ryan Reynolds ends BYU's drive by picking off Max Hall...he returns the ball to the 31 yd line. The momentum seemingly will not switch to the Cougars as they look in over their head.

-- 2 gashing Oklahoma runs bring the Sooners down to the BYU 16 yard line.

-- DeMarco Murray gets to the 2nd level and looks to have a 1st down...BYU Safety Andrew Rich puts his helmet right on the ball and jars it loose. BYU recovers the fumble. BYU, who had been shooting themselves in the foot all evening, finally has a break. And the timing could NOT have come at a better time. Oklahoma was knocking on the door, beginning to gain some traction in the running game, and were a mere 5 yards from taking a 2 TD lead early in the 2nd Quarter. Game Changing.

--BYU 3 and Out

END OF THE FIRST QUARTER OKLAHOMA 7 BYU O

-- Oklahoma had outscored their opponents 225-30 in the 1st Quarter last season.

-- Oklahoma takes over again with great field position at the their own 48. BYU Defense steps up and stops OU 3 and Out on a great play by Scott Johnson.

-- BYU begins their 4th possession with awful field position once again. The 4 drives begin on the BYU 20, 20, 5, and 11. The Cougars manage a couple of first downs to change the field and allow their defense to breathe. A great punt by Riley Stevenson pins OU on their own 1 yard line.

-- Oklahoma tries a running play on 3rd Down for the 3rd Straight possession...and they do not get it. BYU's Defense has held the OU Offense to 4 Three and Out's in 6 total possessions.

-- BYU has its first highlight play of Offense as Max Hall finds McKay Jacobsen on a 49 yd vertical route down the sideline. The ball is badly underthrown. If Hall had been on the money, BYU would have tied the game. This would come back to haunt the Cougars.

-- On a 2nd & Goal from the 19 Robert Anae draws up possibly the first WR screen play in three years...it is executed perfectly as O'Neill Chambers takes the ball all the way to the goaline. Chambers is stripped and fumbles into the endzone...Oklahoma recovers. The Upset is not sure you can deliver a bigger blow to a team...from tying the football game to giving it away at the goaline.

-- Both teams fumbled inside the 10 yard line in the 2nd Quarter...

-- Oklahoma takes over on their own 20 yard line...move methodically down the field..aided by a weak roughing penalty on Colby Clawson. Bradford throws to Broyles, who is stood up by one BYU defender and finished off by LB Jordan Pendleton forcing a fumble...the second time the Sooners had fumbled inside the BYU40.

-- BYU marches down the field to capitalize off of the turnover. A holding call on 1st down moves the ball back to the BYU 27. 2 catches from Pitta brings up a 3rd &1. Oklahoma again shows blitz early, Hall sees it, and delivers a short toss to Brian Kariya. Kariya rumbles down the sideline for 50 yards, settling on the OU 5 yard line. Two plays later Hall finds an open Andrew George at the pylon to tie the game at 7. A great 73 yard drive by the Cougars.

OKLAHOMA 7 BYU 7

--Oklahoma takes over the ball and moves via penalty, Interference on Brian Logan and a Face Mask on Terrence Hooks. Bradford is hit by Colby Clawson on yet another blitz. With 12 seconds left and the Sooners trying to punch it in Bradford is injured on the exact blitz as Clawson used before. Bradford knocked down 3 times and hit 3 more in the 1st Half. Oklahoma knocks in a gimmie FG for a First Half lead.

-- As Max Hall trots off the field he is heard by ESPN microphones yelling, "We're Going to Win"

END OF THE 1ST HALF
OKLAHOMA 10 BYU 7

-- BYU's first possession of the 2nd Half almost ends in disaster as the ball is snapped over Hall's head...he recovers on a friendly hop and throws the it out-of-bounds and out of harm. HUGE bullet dodged by the Cougars. Thanks to the new field turf at the new Cowboys Stadium.

-- Oklahoma's first possession ends in a 3 and Out...Landry Jones is roasted by Jordan Pendleton on the same exact blitz that BYU has been drawing up all game. After the game BYU Defensive Coordiator tells a local radio station that they were trying to take advantage of the OU Center, who was a converted TE. The Center calls out the protection for the rest of the line, and he looked confused all game long. Great scheme by Coach Hill.

-- Two possessions later BYU CB Brian Logan saves a TD with a great open field tackle on Chris Bowl. Oklahoma will eventually punt.

-- Hall forces another throw into Pitta and is intercepted. Oklahoma takes over yet again inside the BYU 30. Gut check time for the BYU Defense.

-- Murray run for 14 yds. Murray for 6 more. 2nd & 4 on the BYU 8

END OF THE THIRD QUARTER
OKLAHOMA 10 BYU 7

-- Brown for 4 yards. The BYU Defense looks like it might be getting worn down. This is where the game hinges. Does the BYU D give in? Oklahoma had just ran 8 straight running plays. They were beginning to gain traction and it looked like the hopes of an upset were slipping out the window.

-- 1st & Goal from the 3. Handoff to Brown...Jan Jorgensen's name is mentioned for the 1st time all game...He makes a tackle behind the line.

-- 2nd & Goal from the 6. Handoff. Pendleton spins off his blocker and makes a fantastic play.

-- 3rd & Goal from the 5. A truly atrocious pass interference call on Brian Logan. Automatic 1st Down...ball placed at the 2.

-- 1st & Goal from the 2. Jordan Pendleton breaks up a Play Action Pass to the FB.

-- 2nd & Goal from the 2. Murray stuffed for a 1 yd gain.

-- 3rd & Goal from the 1. QB Sneak from Jones is ineffective. Great push up front from the Defensive Line.

--4tth & Goal from the 1. Oklahoma comes to the line with 13 seconds on the play clock...and the "sideline audible" backfires and the play clock expires.

-- 4th & Goal from the 6. Oklahoma settles for a FG. What a defensive stand by the BYU stand. They successfully defended 6 snaps inside their own 6 yard line. When the game was on the line...BYU stood firm.

OKLAHOMA 13 BYU 7

-- With 11:41 remaining in the 4th Quarter Max Hall took the reigns of the BYU Offense once again. Two short passes to Tonga and George set up a 3rd & 6 from the 24. BYU uses 5 lineman...splits both TE wide and Hall finds Pitta in a seam for 7 yards. Both TE were open on the play.

-- Hall sacked for the 4th time on 1st Down. A screen to Kariya for 5 yds on 2nd Down sets up a 3rd & 10. Hall rolls right and find Pitta for a big play. A great call to get Hall out of the pocket and he delivered on the money.

-- An incompletion on a slip screen on 1st down is followed by yet another connection between Hall and Pitta. This one again yields a 1st Down.

--1st & 10 from the 35. Kariya is stuffed for a 3 yard loss. A strange play call. BYU was not successful all evening in running east and west...the Oklahoma D was just too fast.

-- 2nd & 13 from the 35. Hall completes to DiLuigi for 5 yards.

-- 3rd & 8 from the 30. Mendenhall is seen covering his headset and Hall is seen calling out what looks to be two plays. The first: a draw to DiLuigi gains 4 yards.

-- 4th & 4 from the 26. BYU quick snaps...Hall under Center...Diluigi in motion to the right...Hall looks off the Safety and finds Pitta in the tightest of spaces. Pitta rumbles all the way to the 3 yard line. Wow. The play of the game up that point. BYU knew they were going for it and took advantage of the Oklahoma defense just as the OU Offense has done so many time in their own version of the hurry up.

-- 1st & Goal from the 3. Kariya is stuffed for no gain. The OU Defense really stepped up in short yardage situations. BYU was unable to open any holes between the tackles.

- 2nd & Goal from the 3. Hall looks to call an audible...he splits his TE out wide....and looks to Andrew George on a slant... George is there and makes a valiant effort...but he is interferred with. 1st & Goal on the 2

-- Kariya is met in the hole on back to back plays...

-- 3rd & Goal from the 1. BYU is up to the line with 10 seconds to spare on the play clock. They do not get the play off in time. The play, which was yet another plunge by Brian Kariya, probably would not have worked.

-- 3rd & Goal from the 6. Hall rolls right and finds McKay Jacobsen in the back of the endzone. Jacobsen was WIDE open. The OU Corner keyed for just a split second on Dennis Pitta, who had 4 catches on the drive...and that mental breakdown allowed #6 to sneak behind the D. A BYU receiver had not had a catch since the 2nd Quarter.

BYU 14 OKLAHOMA 13

-- BYU kicker Mitch Payne kicks the ball out of bounds. At this time in the game...had that ball stayed in bounds that could have been the dagger. The Oklahoma Offense had not had a sustained drive ALL game. With the penalty...Oklahoma started its drive on the 40 yd line.

-- Two straight incompletions for Jones leads to a 3rd & 10. Jones makes a great throw and moves the chains.

-- Murray has a 3 yd catch...OU dials up a great play as Jones rolls left with the pocket and throws across his body to find his TE. Great Play. Great Call. OU now has a 1st down on the BYU 33. OU would have a 50 yard FG at this point.

-- OU runs and Pendleton blows the play up in the backfield for a gain of 1.

-- 2nd & 9 from the 32. Pass looks to be complete but BYU CB Brian Logan, who had been on the tail end of two unfortunate Interference calls, makes a great play to break it up.

-- On 3rd & 9 from the 32...OU is called for yet another False Start. The size of this mistake is hard to fathom. The penalty moved the Sooners to 50+ FG range...and when the FG is finally attempted...it will be about 5 yards short of the cross bar.

-- 3rd & 14 from the 37... Yet another blitz from the BYU linebacking core has Jones on the run and he throws incomplete. Great defensive play calling all game long by BYU DC Jaime Hill. Oklahoma was never in sync offensively.

-- 4th & 14 from the 37. The desperation 54 yard FG is not only wide...it is short and BYU can now enter the victory formation.

The Upset commends the BYU Cougars for game planning and looks forward to seeing just what they can accomplish throughout this 2009 campaign.

Non-BCS teams make case for inclusion

Click title-link for a Big Ten bashing and non-AQ praising from Cleveland Plain Dealer writer Doug Lesmerises.

"You crunch the Heisman Trophy winner, you reap the benefits, no excuses necessary."

Upset Recap: Week 1

The most prominent upset of week one was obviously BYU's 14-13 victory over #3 Oklahoma in the Cowboy Classic. BYU was physical, and Bob Stoops was out-coached by Bronco Mendenhall.

"Punch-gate" notwithstanding, Boise State's victory over Oregon also took place on national TV, and although Oregon looked to be vastly over-rated, the game still has people talking Bronco BCS Busting.

Colorado State also took out Big XII team Colorado on the road in a game where the Rams dominated from start to finish. (Luckily the Big XII escaped more upset as Kansas State squeaked by UMass 21-17).

The Upset would also like to take this time to point out the hypocrisy of the media. A ranked Iowa team trailed Northern Iowa for most of the second half, and needed two blocked field goals to escape with a 17-16 win. Had this been against an MWC or WAC team, invariably it would have been said that "we see that these conferences just aren't that strong or deep." But all that was said is "Iowa comes away with the victory." Doesn't anybody remember that BYU beat No. Iowa 41-17 last season? Why didn't the Big Ten take more crap for this???

And while The Upset is dedicated to football in the MWC and WAC, we would be remissed if we didn't call out the ACC who had 2 losses to FCS teams. Virginia fell at home to William & Mary 26-14, and Duke fell to FCS power Richmond 24-16, also at home. We aren't sure why Duke ever scheduled that game, and wonder if Virginia will ever again be legitimate.

Rams upset Buffs in Boulder

photo: Jack Dempsey, AP

Colorado State jumped out to a 17-0 lead, and eventually rode their 20-3 halftime lead to a victory over their rival Colorado on Sunday night.

The Rams started Grant Stucker at quarterback, who made his very first collegiate start Sunday as a fifth-year senior. Stucker guided the Rams to two first-quarter touchdown drives to help CSU take control of the game early.

Dan "Division-1 Football!" Hawkins, on the other hand, decided not to reveal his starting quarterback until kickoff, when on the Buffaloes' first series, Dan's son Cody Hawkins took the field, a decision that drew the ire of the CU student section. Hawkins struggled in the first half, and CSU had a 20-3 halftime lead.

Colorado came out strong in the second half with a short 1:40 drive to bring the score to 20-10. CU continued to push back with a later drive past CSU's 20, but the drive ended in a fumble that returned the ball to the Rams. On Colorado's next drive, they opted to go for it on a 4th-and-1 on their own half of the field, and the Rams defense rose to the occasion and made the stop.

CSU's last score came on a 18-yard chip shot field goal from K Ben DeLine after coach Fairchild opted not to try for a touchdown on 4th-and-goal at the one-yard line. DeLine's 3/3 field goal performance was crucial, as a late CU touchdown only drew the game to 23-17, and the Buffs didn't see the ball again as the Rams salted the game away.

While we wait to see what Colorado does with their season, this was still a fantastic road win for Colorado State against a BCS opponent, as Fairchild tries to bring the program back to the glory days of Sonny Lubick in the late 90's, when the team often found itself being ranked in the top-25. This was also a great win for the MWC following on the coat tails of BYU's upset win over #3 Oklahoma. The Upset is encouraged by the progress Fairchild has made in his tenure in Fort Collins, and hopes that CSU can again become a player in the college football west.

Cowboys Still Looking For Gun Slinger

Wyoming Coach Dave Christensen was not pleased with the quarterback play in his squads shaky 29-22 victory over FCS squad Weber State. Hopefully for the Cowboys they can find a legitimate starter by Saturday...when the MWC puts its 2 game winning streak on the line against #2 Texas. The 2 QB system probably isnt the greatest strategy against the Longhorns. Graham Watson from ESPN has the story.

CSU Continues MWC Message to Big XII

Colorado State led from beginning to end tonight in Boulder as they defeated their in-state rival Colorado 23-17. The Mountain West is now 2-1 against the Big XII during the young season.

More on this game and a wrap up off all the weeks action tomorrow!

Bronco Brings Back The Blitz

When Bronco Mendenhall was the defensive coordinator at New Mexico he was known for his fiery demeanor and quarterback-confusing defensive scheme. The blitz happy Lobos used a a 3-3-5 set to disrupt opposing offenses. When he moved from New Mexico to defensive coordinator at BYU, he brought the same intensity to the defensive side of the football. Then, he became a head coach.

The BYU Defense has been a shell of its former self during the past 4 seasons. Proponents could argue that BYU has been extremely successful during the past seasons as a result of playing base defense and not taking any chances. BYU, they would argue, allows their offense to win games...and their defense "not to lose" them. The Upset disagrees. The lack of aggresiveness has caused BYU to be too predictable on D.

In some of the biggest games last season BYU's base defense was exposed because opposing offenses knew what to expect. TCU, Colorado State, UNLV, Utah, and Arizona had success with similar game plans. In the days leading up to last nights matchup in Arlington, both Sam Bradford and Bob Stoops mentioned that they anticipated BYU to play a base defense with no consistent pressure. Oh how wrong they were, and oh what a difference a year makes. Last night in Arlington the fiery, blitz-happy BYU defese was back with a vengence.

From the opening snap BYU used an impressive defensive game plan that pressured, confused, and eventually forced Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford to leave the game due to injury late in the first half. Bradford was knocked to the ground a number of times and truly never found his rhythm, passing for only 96 yards before leaving the game late in the second quarter. The BYU defensive line was able to contain the Oklahoma running attack all game long. In fact, the longest Oklahoma run from scrimmage was a mere 16 yards. The linebackers also came to play. Outside LB's Colby Clawson and Jordan Pendelton were seemingly in on every play. And the much maligned BYU corners responded very well to the OU passing attack.

BYU held the potent Oklahoma offense to only 265 total yards. The defense also kept the Oklahoma offense off the field. Oklahoma only managed to control the ball for just under 23 minutes of game time. A monopoly of media experts commented that BYU just couldnt handle the overall team speed that the Sooners would bring. But, just as in the Oregon-Boise State matchup, the difference was just not that noticable...at least when comparing the OU Offense and the BYU Defense.

Looking forward, BYU fans should be excited at the idea of a smash mouth defense to go along with their efficient offense. And if Bronco Mendenhall's defense can keep an offense the caliber of Oklahoma on its heels, imagine what the Cougars could accomplish against the Mountain West Conference.
NOTE: It should be mentioned that Mendenahll has turned over a slew of responsibilty to Assistant Coach Jaime Hill. This move could be another reason why BYU seemed have a different style of Defensive play.

BYU, Boise St Defenses Step Up

Those who weren't convinced that BYU's upset victory over Oklahoma didnt change the landscape of the entire 2009 College Football Campaign should take a look at the frontpage of ESPN.com ESPN's Pat Forde has penned a great column speaking to the tremendous performaces by the Cougars in Arlington last night. Forde also speaks to the dominating Boise State victory over Oregon earlier in the week. BYU and Boise State seem to have the inside track at getting to a BCS Bowl game this season.

"BYU Earned It"

Click title link to see CollegeFootballNews.com's writers give their take on BYU's upset of #3 Oklahoma.

"Bronco Mendenhall owned Stoops down the stretch; don't assign this loss to Bradford's injury — BYU earned it with superior coaching (and play). " --Matt Zemek

BYU takes down Oklahoma

It's late, and we won't have much time to write until later, but it must be said that BYU played a terrific game, and even left 10 points on the field in the process. The defense was very solid.

And The Upset does want to make one thing clear: Sam Bradford's injury did NOT win BYU the football game. BYU limited the Heisman winner to just 96 yards in the first half. The Upset also points out that BYU was without RB Harvey Unga, a player who eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards in each of his last 2 seasons. BYU won the game with 28 total rushing yards.

It is also clear that The Visor is simply unable to win big games anymore. "Big Game" Bob can't win bowl games, and he can't beat 'mid-majors' that he is 'supposed' to be beating.

BYU struck a HUGE blow for the Mountain West Conference. The MWC has posted back to back stunning wins on the national stage and on national television. Utah beating Alabama and BYU beating OU has forced the MWC onto the national table of discussion.

WEEK 1 PREDICTIONS

Nicholls State @ Air Force (NO LINE) Air Force should have their way with the Colonels on Saturday. Unlike their MWC brethren, the Falcons schedule down in Non-Conference. Air Force 38-10

Weber State @ Wyoming (NO LINE) The Cowboys are breaking a new Offense one week prior to their matchup with Number 2 Texas...and Weber State is legit. Weber State 28-27

BYU @ Oklahoma (-22.5) A primetime matchup will allow both offenses to be showcased...one just happens to have the reigning Heisman winner. Oklahoma 49-31

New Mexico @ Texas A&M (-15) The Lobos are also breaking in a new system...and Kyle Field is an intimidating place to grow up. Texas A&M 30-20

San Diego State @ UCLA (-18.5) A rebuilt coaching staff has SDSU going in the right direction...but they aren't miracle workers just yet. UCLA 27-7

Sacramento State @ UNLV (NO LINE) A lower-level FCS opponent should be fine fodder for the MWC most underrated player. UNLV 42-14

Colorado State @ Colorado (-10) This annual rivaly always produces a good game. This year should be no different. Colorado 24-17

Central Arkansas @ Hawaii (NO LINE) The Warrior program needs to have something else to talk about...like football. Hawaii 31-13

San Jose State @ USC (-34.5) Highly touted true Freshman Matt Barkley will get the start for the Trojans...not that it will affect the outcome of the game. USC 35-10

Nevada @ Notre Dame (-14.5) The Irish come into 2009 with high expecations...as do the Wolfpack...Should be a great Offensive display from two very different styles. ND 42-31

Louisiana Tech @ Auburn (-13.5) The Bulldogs look to win their 2nd in a row against an SEC club...sadly...Auburn is better than Mississippi State. Auburn 22-7

Idaho @ New Mexico State (-2.5) Whoever agreed to play a conference game during opening weekend needs to have a CAT scan. New Mexico State 24-21

Cal-Davis @ Fresno State (NO LINE) Fresno State should take care of business one week prior to a brutal stretch against Wisconsin, Boise State, and Cincinnati in as many weeks. Fresno State 37-7

'Blount'-Force Trauma to the Head: Oregon RB Suspended for Season

Most people in the West have probably seen the video (and by now, those in the East who went to bed at halftime have seen it on highlights as well).

Game Over. Boise State 19, Oregon 8. Boise DE Byron Hout finds his way to Oregon RB LeGarrette Blount, gives him a nice smack on the shoulder pads, and utters something. As Boise head coach Chris Petersen, who was only feet away, grabs Hout, Blount throws a quick punch, hitting Hout square in the right side of the head. Blount back pedals and rolls his arms in a boxer-like exhibition, is belligerent with his own teammates who try to restrain him, and then proceeds to go after taunting fans.

Our take at The Upset is simple:

Blount had the taunting coming. While what Hout did was not wise, this game was discussed for months upon end, and the climate morphed into a rivalry-like feeling, especially with Boise winning last year’s game. Blount had to know that if Boise won this year after his “We owe them an a** whooping” comment, he would be subject to whatever smack came his way.

Hout had the punch coming. While Blount over-reacted to what he should have expected to be coming, Hout is not without fault. It is no shock that Blount popped him. Oregon’s offense was a dumpster fire. Blount himself finished the game with -5 rushing yards, an impressive average of -0.6 yards per carry. Did Hout expect Blount to engage in good-natured jeering moments after being embarrassed in such a way? While it doesn’t excuse Blount’s lapse of judgment, Hout got what was coming—especially if what he said was incendiary and not just ‘good-natured.’

Chris Petersen is a great coach. Petersen immediately grabbed Hout after the words were said. Even after Hout was sucker-punched, Petersen never even turned to look at Blount or anything else that went on. He looked Hout straight in the eyes (after he got his bearings back), and continued to focus on his player and the correction that his player needed. Watch the tape again and focus on Petersen. His own player got punched right in front of his face, and Petersen doesn’t even flinch. And by the look on Hout’s face, we know that Petersen teaches accountability at Boise State.

Blount’s suspension is warranted. Moments ago it came down from ESPN that Blount will in fact be suspended for the rest of the season. He was less than five feet away from starting a riot. It was on Blount to move past the fans and get into the locker room, but instead, he almost incited an all-out, Palace-of-Auburn-Hills type melee. Hout was the beer thrower, and Blount was Ron Artest. It is also being reported that Coach Petersen will not suspend Hout, but will spend time counseling him on the situation. The Upset commends both schools for appropriate action, and hopes that Blount can learn from his mistake. He is a senior, and he ruined his last season.

Boise's 'D' Packs a Punch, Then Receives One

The most anticipated game in the history of Bronco Stadium turned out to be worthy of its primetime TV slot as Boise State made it two in a row over Pac-10 foe Oregon 19-8. The Broncos dominated the Ducks from the opening kickoff, implementing a great defensive gameplan to slow down the potent U of O spread-option attack.

Boise State, hosting the first ranked team to step foot on the Smurf Turf during regular season, were in complete control of the game from beginning to end. The Oregon offense, which had led the Pac-10 last season in YPG and PPG, acconted for only 14 yards of total offense at halftime. The Ducks didnt manage to gain a first down until late in the 3rd quarter.

The Bronco offense used a balanced attack of run and pass in route to nearly 400 yards of total offense. The game was marred midway through the 3rd quarter when both squads turned the football over in 4 consecutive possessions. The 11 point spread could have been much worse with Boise State not capitalizing on a 1st and Goal from the 2 yard line and missing three makeable FG's.

Boise State extended their home winning streak to 20 games.

Oregon RB LeGarrette Blount punched a Boise State player in the face following the game. More on that after the bump...

The Upset was not surprised at the outcome. Boise State controlled and dominated the two teams previous meeting in Eugene last Fall. Boise State's schedule should allow them to sail through the WAC relatively untested. The Upset is continually impressed with the type of atheletes Chris Peterson is bringing into Boise. Oregon is a team that relies heavily on speed. And there was no point in last nights game where you could see a distinct advantage in speed and talent between the two squads. In fact, if you were to watch the game and not know what team was from the Pac-10, and what one was from a Non-AQ conference...it would be hard to decide.

Such is the argument The Upset makes time and time again. There are four or five programs in the West that can compete with any squad in Division I football week in and week out. Former Notre Dame coach Bob Davie made the opposite point during last nights broadcast. Davies argument, which stated that Non-AQ teams such as Boise State couldnt compete in a BCS Conference week in week out because the overall talent level is not as great as what is found in BCS Conferences. While The Upset would agree somewhat with the propostion...that is not really the argument the Non-AQ squads are making. If the question is: Would (Boise State, Utah, TCU, or BYU) perform as USC or Florida if they were planted in a BCS Conference? The answer would certainly be no. But the said Non-AQ teams would certainly be able to perfom in a manner similar to teams such as Oregon, California, Auburn, and Arkansas. And the mid-level of BCS Schools have a much greater opportunity to win a national title that a Non-AQ team could ever dream of. So is the system we despise.

Cain solid as Utah extends streak to 15 games

Terrence Cain was solid and Matt Asiata proved his ability to be the workhorse in Utah’s 35-17 win over Utah State on Thursday night.

In Cain’s first FBS start, he showed much of the same that Utah fans were accustomed to seeing from Brian Johnson last season. Cain made solid decisions as the Ute offense racked up 519 total yards, Cain himself going 20-30 for 286 yards and 2 TD’s.

Utah’s passing defense was exception, allowing only 121 yards and batting down several passes at the line of scrimmage, making Aggie quarterback Diondre Borel understand what Max Hall felt like last season.

The Ute rushing defense was not nearly as solid, as Utah State’s Robert Turbin ended the game with 148 yards on only 13 carries. Utah also struggled to contain Borel due to his athleticism and ability to make plays with his feet.

For the Utes, Asiata rushed for 156 yards on a load of 36 carries. David Reed, who was by far Cain’s favorite target, also had 10 catches for 172.

In the end, the result was about as expected. Although Utah did not cover the Vegas line, it was well in control throughout. The Upset was impressed by Cain’s poise and feels that Utah, if their run defense can improve, may be more equipped to defend its conference title than was previously expected, while understanding that they were only playing a Utah State team that went 6-30 in the last 3 seasons.
