News broke late last night that Hawaii has been invited to join the Mountain West Conference in football. Both Hawaii and the MWC have confirmed that talks are under way, and the Warriors are said to consider taking all other sports to the Big West.
At this point, the MWC's movements look to be nothing more than an attempt to cripple the WAC and get back at Utah State for being BYU's liaison in their original independence deal with the WAC ... and Comrade Craig Thompson just may have done it. The WAC is adding three schools from the FCS ranks but not for a few years, and in 2012 the MWC will be a five-school league, effectively making it "not a conference" anymore. Conferences must have 6 teams who have been together for 5 years or more for an NCAA auto bid. Hawaii does nothing for MWC in terms of a BCS auto-bid.
The only thing the move does for Hawaii is get them off the U.S.S. Karl Benson before it sinks. All the Big West seems to be gaining is one more mouth to feed and jacked up travel expenses.
