The Aztecs impressed throughout and led almost from start to finish, only surrendering their lead for a few moments early in the second half.
SDSU forwards Billy White and Kawhi Leonard were the stars of the night. White scored 30 points on 14-18 shooting and nabbed 9 rebounds, while Leonard, last year's MWC Freshman of the Year, put down 18 points while grabbing 12 rebounds. The Aztecs were relentless on the boards, pulling down 18 of their 33 rebounds on the offensive end. With the turnover battle even, it was this work on the boards that gave SDSU the edge as they were able to get 13 more FG attempts than Gonzaga.
The win marked Steve Fisher's 200th as coach of the Aztecs, who secured a key win as 4 of their first 5 games are on the road.
Gonzaga guard Steven Gray poured in 35 points, but received little help as the Bulldogs suffered just their 5th loss at home since their new McCarthey Athletic Center opened in 2004.
SDSU was already picked to win the MWC, but this will surely make people take notice. Steve Fisher just might have a ball club on his hands.

The MWC is a major
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading our blog. As we have said many times, the use of "mid-major" is not a knock by any means. It is the most clear moniker we could use. It simply means "outside of the 6 BCS conferences." By virtue of their play, the MWC is a "major," of course. But by using the term mid-major, people know what we cover, namely the MWC and WAC.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your coverage of the MWC and SDSU. Go Aztecs, fight on and on
ReplyDeleteJust call those schools, "Non-Cartel".
