Rate That Uni: New Mexico

Up next in our Rate That Uni series is New Mexico. The Lobos made some uniform changes a couple seasons ago. Do our panelists like it? And give us your voice as well: how do you like the look of the New Mexico Lobos? Vote in the poll at the bottom and leave your comments as well.

** Editor's Note: UNM is primed to get new football uni's as early as this season.**

John: Call me a fan. It's not perfect, but New Mexico greatly improved its uniforms with the recent changes. I like the straight lines on the shoulder stripes and pants. The helmet is solid, if not spectacular. I don't particularly care for the font on the uniform numbers and wordmark, but those are minor quibbles. I like the silver pants with the red jersey and the red pants with the road jersey. Perfect combinations on both sets. All in all, New Mexico looks sharp.

Zach: I despise the New Mexico helmet simply because the logo is ridiculous. Go check out Helmet Project and tell me the Lobos don't have a better option. The Lobo looks like the rejected idea of a 1950's cartoon sketch. The home jerseys come across very high-school-esque. Perhaps it is the lettering on the front and the awkward number font on the back. Or maybe it's the strange gray colored pants. Simply put, UNM should have a better look with such a nice color pattern. I like the the red emphasis in the road uniform. No weird stripes or tramp stamps to be seen. Very classy. Nice use of gray as an accent on the shoulder sleeves. Solid get-up.

Brett: I like the silver helmets, but I’ve always thought this cartoonish logo was slightly odd. However, if you reference the Helmet Project to which Zach referred, they improved by making the helmet logo smaller; it used to be huge. While these uniforms are simple, they moved away from the old, turn-of-the-millennium Miami template (which Nevada still inexplicably uses!), to something more simple. They made positive change, which wins points with me (yet doesn’t appear to win points for the Lobos, who have won only 2 games since debuting these uniforms in 2009). Not A’s because nothing wows me, and I think the numbers on the back are too big. Other than that, however, a solid effort from the Lobos.

DJ: Meh. They have the colors and the logo to design something very cool, but everything they have is just meh. I liked the old numbers, not the new, bubblier numbers. I love the look of white tops and red bottoms or red tops and silver bottoms. I wouldn't mind seeing them go with these jerseys. These would probably muster a B. I give them a B- because there is potential for something great; however, it is New Mexico, so they will never be great. I hope Mike Locksley doesn't read my review and try to punch me or choke me out.
