ESPN and WCC announce new 8-year TV deal

ESPN and the West Coast Conference have just announced a new 8-year basketball deal that will double the number of WCC men's basketball games appearing on the network. The new deal will also lead to increased coverage of women's basketball and WCC Olympic sports over the range of ESPN platforms (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3.com, ESPN Mobile).

We at The Upset love the new deal. We caught the Mid-Majority fever and found ourselves watching many WCC games in the late time slot. With St. Mary's developing from a good team into a solid program, the ever-strong Gonzaga, and new-comer BYU, TV viewers should be in for a treat if they have yet to partake of the goodness that is WCC basketball.

Here is the full press release from ESPN.

As the Unofficial Official East Coast Reader (or, Yoo-Ker) of this blog, let me just fire off a quick, possibly condescending "good for you!" I can relate. See, as the fan of a fairly well known college basketball program (you may have heard of them - the University of North Carolina), I'm used to my team occasionally playing as late as SIX IN THE AFTERNOON West Coast time.

This leads me to my chief complaint about the way college basketball is presented by the WorldWide Leader: nobody gets that basketball games take longer than 2 hours. How often have you ever tuned in for the "late game" on ESPN and had to endure 20 minutes of Seton Hall fouling Providence while down 20 at the under 4 timeout? Meanwhile, Georgia Tech has somehow, under cover of time lag, opened a 54-1 lead by the time you get to watch.

Therefore, I hope that all new deals like this include a clause whereby the first game of doubleheaders start at 6:40 Eastern, the second at 9:10. It's bad enough you make me stay up until 11:30 every time Duke and Carolina play. The least you can do is make sure I can see the tip.

Totally agree. The way ESPN schedules college basketball games has been strange. Just adding 15 min to each broadcast slot would do wonders.
