Rate That Uni: UNLV

Rate That Uni heads to Vegas for a look at the threads the Rebels have been wearing for the last few seasons. UNLV has been using a pretty standard set of uniforms for several years that feature large, gray shoulder panels, with only slight changes to the helmet and really no alternative jerseys. Will our panelists like the panels? Read our thoughts, and cast your vote at the bottom.

Brett: Overall, UNLV’s look isn’t bad. The helmet is good. Not outstanding, but good. I like their uniforms except for the weird gray shoulders that start at the neck and extend all the way down the side panel. Who came up with that? Get rid of it all. The home uniforms would look great if the tops were just all red with no different-colored-shoulder panels. I like the numbering, I like the Rebels nameplate on the front. Just have to get rid of those gray panels. Also, add names on the back. Your players work hard to make you money. Give them names on their uniforms. Only schools who have done it that way since JoePa got hired should continue doing that.

DJ: These jerseys are as ugly as Vegas streetwalkers are trashy. The helmet is plain and boring. I'd rather a Penn State helmet. Jerseys are hideous. The UNLV patch on the sleeve? Yikes. No names on the back of the jerseys. Random thin stripe down the pants. I literally have nothing else to stay. These are the dullest things in the bright lights of Vegas.

John: OK, UNLV, you get points for improving the helmet.  Not that it's anything special, but it's a big improvement over the pointy stripe of a few years ago, or the more recent super thin stripe down the middle.  That is about all I can say positive about these uniforms.  Did the XFL have some leftover stock uniforms?  What exactly is going on with those tops?  This could be a decent set with a few changes.  First, drop the shoulder/side panel mess.  It just looks awful.  Two tone tops are rarely a good look, and these ones are definitely not a good look.  Second, use TV numbers instead of the "UNLV" on the shoulders.  It's redundant considering you get the same exact logo a foot above the shoulders since the same thing is used on the side of the helmets.  These changes would turn a "D" set of uniforms into an "A" or "B" set.

Zach: For a school with a fantastic mascot and a terrific color scheme, UNLV sure knows how to screw up a uniform. The only positive in this get-up is the helmet, which frankly doesn't wow me nor frustrate me. When "meh" becomes a positive attribute, you have problems. The gray sleeves on both uniforms are just hideous. I like the name-plate. Classy. But do we really need three U-N-L-V logos from the shoulders up? The color scheme could be really nice if done properly. Now that I think about it, UNLV has never had a good football uniform. Again, a complete missed opportunity for our friends in Sin City.

I personally don't mind UNLV's that much. I dont think enough credit was given. New Mexico on the other hand....

I have to disagree with you guys. I'm a Vegas native and a UNLV home season ticket holder. I love the current uniforms! The day after I saw this uniform for the first time at a UNLV home game two years ago, I rushed out to the UNLV bookstore and bought myself one of these jerseys. Of course, the fact that I had a 50% coupon helped that considerably.

The uniform (jersey in particular) is simple and elegant. The colors create a great contrast. And the large-print "Rebels" and "UNLV" on the chest and sleeves (respectively) show symbolic pride for the school.

My only complaint with the uniform is that I miss the pointed, red stripe from the old helmets.

P.S. I do agree that the "UNLV" logo does appear a bit much from the shoulders up. I wouldn't mind seeing one or both of the "UNLV" logos on the sleeves being replaced with an image of the mascot logo.

The helmet really looks good but not ultimately standing indeed. The design is just simple. It's not really compelling but presentable. I love the uniforms though. afl shop
