Rate That Uni: Wyoming

Today we finish up the uniform ratings for the Mountain West with Wyoming. Many know that that Cowboys are blessed with a rather unfortunate color scheme, but given that, how do their uniforms stack up? Have they made proper use of uniform design principles, according to our panelists? The Pokes have used most of their possible combinations of pant/top combos, so there is a lot to consider today. Read our thoughts and cast your vote below.

Zach: I think Wyoming does about as well as one can do given the color scheme they were dealt. But who is going to change it? Brown and yellow are simply good ol' fashioned Cowboy colors, and the look as become a defining characteristic of Wyo athletics. First of all, I think the helmet is terrific. No stripes on the helmet, a simple cowboy logo. Very classy. In the midst of a slew of uniforms, a couple of things stood out. First, I don't understand what kind of stripe thingy is going on at the ribcage. It looks like someone forgot the uniform color and tried to hide their mistake under the arms of the player. I like the shoulder numbers. The best get-up for Wyoming is the white top/brown pant/white helmet look (as seen in the BYU photo) Too much brown or too much white in the other sets. I do not like the yellow pants in either set. The alternate is an interesting piece. I really like the WYO nameplate and jersey type. Very classy. Not sure about the COWBOYS down the pants. I'd take that off. I'd also remove that ugly stripe on the helmet. Other than that, I think the alternate has great promise. All in all, I think Wyoming is an upper-echelon uniform in the world of college football.

Brett: First, I don’t know what’s not to like about the Wyoming helmet. It’s iconic, been used since the early ‘60s. The cowboy silhouette is iconic for the state of Wyoming, and the university couldn’t pick anything better for the helmet.  Overall, I love Wyoming’s set of uniforms. I knocked each uniform jersey top down half-a-grade because of the weird side-panel swatch of color (except for the yellow tops, which don’t have it.) I dislike the triangle swatch of color on the white and yellow pants, though it looks worse on the yellow pants. The brown-on-brown look is terrible, they should never use it. A word on the alternates: they are fantastic. They are still full school colors. I love the WYO nameplate. And I like the brown pants in the alternates and with the white tops, with the COWBOYS wordmark down the pants. The alternates would be a full-blown A if not for the short, pointy stripes on the helmet. But I like the alternate helmet, and love that look. Strong, classic overall look for Wyoming’s set.

DJ: Wyoming already has the difficult task of using my alma mater's (junior high) colors of yellow and dark brown. First, brown should NEVER be used in a logo scheme. Ever. I will give Wyoming the benefit of the doubt though. They have done rather well on some jerseys. They need to go to the alternative helmet full time. I actually like the alternative jerseys - even with the dark brown pants; however, I am not crazy about the Oregon-like design on the shoulder pads. It just doesn't fit Wyoming to me. I also don't mind the all-whites. In fact, each of their white tops can get the job done. The all-browns need to be disposed of along with any brown tops. Even with the worst possible colors in all of college athletics, Wyoming could jump into the B range if they did away with their traditional home uniforms.

John: Once again, I will note that I am not grading based on colors.  At least, I'm doing my best to avoid doing so, though you can't deny the advantage that a school with a beautiful color scheme has in the world of uniform aesthetics.  Just as I didn't dock Boise State based on ugly colors, nor will I do so for Wyoming.  I'll even go so far as to say that there's something about Wyoming's colors that I like.  But that's irrelevant.  Wyoming's mediocre grades are due to factors that have nothing to do with color scheme.  First, there is the matter of unnecessary piping on the jerseys.  You'll note that it's especially obvious on the brown tops.  Next, I can't stand the ridiculous "box" on the side of the uniforms and the pant stripe that starts out fat on the bottom and fades to a near point.  It's standard-issue Nikification, and it's dreck.  Finally, I really don't like this trend of mixing and matching various color pants and tops.  A team should have a single home combo and a single road combo.  I know Oregon has gotten a lot of publicity doing this, and Virginia and Oklahoma State are doing something similar, but it is not a favorable trend.  Pick your best combo and go with it.  Brown top and yellow pants at home, and white top and brown pants on the road.  As for the alternates: what a disaster.  The yellow top, the "WYO", the pointy helmet stripes, and the "COWBOYS" running down the pants: all full of fail.  Never. Do. This. Again.

I gotta be honest, I'm a sucker for Wyoming's colors. I love the brown and yellow, and I love the Cowboy logo. The colors may rub people the wrong way, but it's unique, and it's quintessential Wyoming.

The uni combos are all pretty good in my eyes, although I agree with Zach- I'd lose the "Cowboys" going down the pant leg of the alternates.

I'll take the brown & gold over the yellow & green of the lambs anyday. When you see brown & gold it can only be one team.

I agree Doc. It is a Wyo staple. Never touch the brown and gold.

The colors are brown and gold. Not yellow and brown.
