And as we continue, another thanks to John Cary of @KilroyFSU fame for joining us in this special series. It's been good to get an "outsider's" view as a Florida State fan and well-traveled man.

John: Thank you, BYU for returning to your uniform roots after some massively failed experiments over the last decade. Who can forget the bib uniform debacle? Or the beige? This is how uniforms should be done, monochrome sets notwithstanding. Love the modified Northwestern stripes on the pants and sleeves. Love the classic helmet. Not much more to say about these, really. Well done. Just lose the blue pants at home and the white pants on the road, and we'd be looking at a straight A set of uniforms. Other schools take note: bold, simple designs almost always look better than gimmicky, trendy styles.
Zach: BYU ruined one of the best uni combos in the nation during the late 20th, early 21st century. The implementation of "bibs" and "copper" brought great shame on the university. The disavowal of the classic BYU helmet was also an abomination. Blame Crowton? Sure. You must also blame LaVell Edwards who allowed the changes to take place after the 1998 season. Awful. Thankfully, Bronco Mendenhall re-instituted the classic look with one notable difference: Where is the royal blue? That being said, the standard of excellence is back with a uniform set that refuses to do too much. Classic lines, decals, numbers, and logos make this a tremendous set of threads. The institution of all-blue and all-white combos in 2010 were met with mixed results. The all-blues are a mistake while I think the all-whites look terrific. Fact remains, BYU has a great basic uniform combo. Still, I long for the royal blue... (Any Utah State fans who would like to donate to my PayPal for the preceding commentary, DM me)
Brett: BYU’s helmets are near-perfect, but something about their helmet stickers bothers me. Maybe it’s that they are too big? Or that players don’t get enough? The best players should have a helmet full of pride stickers at season’s end, and BYU’s players never seem to. The standard home set is beautiful, but the all blue set is an atrocity. It looks like they trotted out in pajamas or something. The road unis with blue pants also look slightly funny to me. The stripes are matching—a wide stripe outlined with two thin stripes—but because of the color difference (blue-on-white versus white-on-blue) they still appear to be unmatched to my eyes. Big fan of the all white uniforms for BYU. Overall, a strong set, but they should never use the all-blues again.
DJ: These are great uniforms. I just couldn't allow myself to give A’s. In fact, I probably overcompensated in case someone thought I was being biased. I am on the stand of BYU using the royal blue color scheme full-time. I would probably give them A’s all around if they did that. I think those jerseys are amazing. The logo on the helmet is classic and should never have another major change. All the stripes match, the colors blend, and the jersey is crisp. BYU should use all whites at least 4 times a year. Overall, BYU barely gets over a B+ to an A-. They have room for improvement, mainly the royal blues, but still a great jersey.

what about the special game classic royal blues... they use them in some major games. IE the Las Vegas bowl 2 years ago vs Oregon State.
Good question. BYU used the classic Royal Blues against Utah and Oregon State in 2009 as a tribute to the 25th anniversary of the 1984 National Championship game. It was said after the bowl game that they would not wear them again, so we did not include them in our ratings.
If you're going to rate the all blues and all whites, you needed to rate the royal blue throwbacks, as well.
Brett: An F for the all-blues? #cmonson
BYU got it right by ditching the royal blue from the outfit. The navy blue fits this uni perfectly. Has that Penn State class to it. One of the best unis in all of college football.
They did only wear the all blues once, that is true. Wore the whites twice though. And like I said above, BYU said they would not ever wear the royal blues again, so no need to rate them. That was 2 seasons ago.
And yes, and F for the blue-on-blues. Those are freaking terrible.
Surprisingly I wish my team (BYU) would improve their uni some... The triple stripes just say 80's to me. And there's some validity to that- it was the time when BYU came into their own. I just wish for a more modern yet not overdone (see the bibs, copper) updated uniform... And the royal blue.
Just an awesome set of unis. Nothing fancy. BYU gets an A from me.
Love the unis just as they are. The all blue or whites were a nice change last season, however I'd prefer not seeing them again. As for the royal blue... save them for "special" occasions. Historically BYU's original colors were not "royal" but Prussian blue, a very similar shade to what they are now. I agree that the all blue uniforms are pretty ugly, but I also wish they would return to the royal blue full time. Looked so sharp a couple years ago against Utah. Also the royal blue is a more noticeable color for fans to wear. The BYU student section is unimpressively colorless.
Clearly I'm in the minority, but I loved the all-blue set we saw last year. I thought it looked great, and I'd like to see it for one home game a year. (Maybe vs. Idaho State this year).
Also, just throwing it out there: all white on the road wasn't entirely new last year: BYU wore all whites at Washington in 1996.
you do realize that the white helmet doesn't match the white on the jerseys? they also have two different colors of blue in their unis. the armband blue is different than the blue on the pants. don't believe me? look closely next time.
