Rate That Uni: Colorado

Continuing with the Pac12 rivalry pairs, today we have Colorado and Utah. Up first, the Colorado Buffaloes. Here are our thoughts, make sure to cast your vote at the end of the post so you can tell us if we got it right.

Editor's Note: Last season Colorado featured a set of classic throwbacks with a classic shoulder stripe at home. (You may remember their uniforms with the white bumps all over). Paul Lukas of the revered Uni Watch Blog indicates that Colorado will be switching full time to the classic uniform at home and on the road, and also that the Buffs may only wear black or gold pants (no white pants). Because of this, we will be rating the classic home look, and the road white tops with black pants.

DJ: Sweet colors all around. I love the helmet color. It shines and looks beautiful. For some reason, I just can't give it an A though. I do like the homes, but if they went black on black with gold helmets, that would be delicious. The roads are clean. There isn't much to these unis, but that's what makes them so pretty (along with a great color scheme). The reason I am giving a B+ overall is because the helmets don't match the pants on the homes. Utah did this a few years back where the color of the helmet and jersey did not match. It makes the uniform look stupid when they do that. B+ for a good looking uni.

John: True story: I grew up in Colorado hating CU. OK, "hating" is a bit strong, but I didn't like the Buffs. As a senior in high school, Colorado State was the only college I applied to. I was going to be a Ram. Life happened, though, I took a year off to work, ended up going to Florida State because my girlfriend's (my current wife's) parents moved back to their hometown in Florida, and the rest is history. These are the CU uniforms I remember growing up though, and despite my dislike for CU (which has diminished over the years), I must admit they have some really, really nice looking uniforms. Great job by CU moving away from the uglier, new-fangled designs of the past few years in favor of the classic uniforms seen here. Hopefully they don't run them by adding a wrinkle such as black pants at home. Only one thing really bugs me about the uniform, and that is that the shade of gold on the helmets don't match the shade of gold on the pants. Florida State had this problem about 15 years ago and fixed it, to rave reviews. CU should do the same. Otherwise, great new (old) sets of uniforms for the Pac 12 debut season.

Brett: A beautiful set of uniforms for the Buffs. Fantastic move to get away from the weird design with the white bumps all over. Also like the move if they will stay away from white pants on the road. I generally don’t mind that look, but they have better options with gold and black pants. Love the helmet. Nice work. Less is more for Colorado (in the jersey department, that is). Agree with John, making sure the pants and helmet match golds is key. That is the only thing keeping them from getting straight A’s.

Zach: As mentioned with the University of Idaho set, black-and-gold is the best color combo around. I try not give extra credit for this point alone, but it is hard not to. Blame my high school allegiance. (Roy High: Home of Jim McMahon, Super Bowl Champ; and of course, So You Think You Can Dance champion Sabra Johnson. Word.) It is nice to see Colorado returning to its roots. The classic Buffs look is a much needed relief from the threads of the Hawkins era. Solid shoulder stripes, alternating pant colors on the home and road, equal to a solid set. Love Colorado's helmet. A true classic. Also enjoy the COLORADO nameplate across the front. Not many teams can pull it off. Colorado does.
