Brett: The helmet is slightly uninspiring, but the colors are sharp. Perhaps they could stick the grizzly paw from the back of the alternate helmets (in maroon of course) and it would be better. But a solid helmet still. Love the home and road sets, the only bad mark is for the black stripe on the sides of the tops and pants. Very unnecessary. I also have mixed feelings about the gray words/numbers on the home set. The black alternates are interesting. I don’t know enough about Montana ’s history to know if these have significance. Overall, though, a strong set.
John: So what exactly don't I like about The Griz' uniforms? Mostly, the gratuitous use of black, and I'm not even talking about the horrendous black alternates. We'll get to those in a moment. The uniforms would be an A set if they didn't have the black stripe on the pants and the black sleeves on the home jersey. The school colors are maroon and silver, not maroon, silver, and black. I like the silver pants and the maroon and white tops. This should be an "A" set of uniforms. As for the alternates, they are just awful. I'm sure there's some historic precedent for using silver, black, and orange, but even if so, it's ugly and those are not the school colors. It didn't work for Colorado State and it doesn't work for Montana . I also hate helmets that deviate from the normal helmet format by doing goofy things like the huge bronco head on one side of the Boise State Pro Combat set. This is just as bad. Stop. Please.
Zach: Unlike some of the teams we have chronicled in the Mountain West, Western Athletic, and Pacific 12 conferences, the Big Sky's crown jewel (at least in football) Montana , does it the right way. Great colors do not go to waste. Minimalistic approach. Love that the pant color stays the same on both the home and the road. Great name plate. Unique helmet and branding. All around, Montana not only has one of the best sets in the Big Sky, or FCS, but all of college football. Black alternates/throwbacks are awful, but no sense dinging the Grizzlies for the exception. Just don't wear them again. Ever.

Thanks for doing the Big Sky schools. Where is DJ on this one?
I pray that this is just a request for letting you know what we think of the colors. I sincerely hope that the Griz are NOT planning on changing their colors at any time in the near future because the Silver and Auburn have been the school colors since my Father graduated back in the 40's. I truly hope that they will still have these same colors by the time I pass away, after all some TRADITIONS SHOULDN'T BE SCREWED AROUND WITH JUST TO KEEP UP WITH SOME STUPID FAD!!!!!!
I'm sorry I've got to say I know cost is a big part of it, but I got into Griz football back in 92' when they couldn't give tickets away. I have been and will always be a copper and gold fan in Montana. In fact my father and I decided to paint our 51' GMC pickup with the copper and gold. True fans stay true to what they became a fan of.
I am in "hell week" with work. Sorry. Hopefully I'll be back for previews.
I know the uniforms used to be black and orange cuz my folks showed me pics of sometime in the last 35 years, but to me it just looks like Halloween. I love the Silver and Burgundy and I gave them a C cuz although I like the home uniforms (assuming silver and burgundy is for home games) I give them an F on the black and orange (which I am also assuming are for away games). If they are gonna use the black and orange for home games then I give them an F overall.
It's not orange, it's copper. Montana wore copper and gold from the late 60's until 1995. The Black alts were a nod to the Old Griz colors. Personally, I like the blacks alts as they combine the modern trend of all black alts while including a nod to the schools past.
Burgundy? Auburn?
Nope, thats Maroon.....
Maroon and silver.
Pete Berger and FirstNoel, check your UM history.
The Griz switched back to the Halloween colors last year when they got beat by the Bobcats. They either looked like Idaho State or the Chinook (MT) Sugerbeaters.
Love the uniforms all around. The black alternates were horrible but the helmet was sweet. What about adding the paw to the silver helmets like Brett said?
Alternate black is Hallow-weenie.
The Cats knew we had it won when we saw Idaho State run on the field!
I like the new uniform colors and I have never understood why a color that is supposed to be COPPER comes out as orange on the alts? If it actually looked like copper it might be kinda cool!
The Alt was just a one time thing. Its not actually an alternate at all. it was worn for the Griz-Cat game last year. So without that monstrosity I'd have to go with a B, the helmet is a classic and easily recognizable even with the old Copper and Gold colors. The jersey's however are too Nike. It seems like they have turned into the FCS Oregon without the 45 different combos.
The home uniforms look good, but the aways lack color and the alts are just awful.
The helmet could be better with a better logo or something. All told I voted C.
It's odd that a school that is so geographically close to WSU would choose a similar color scheme though.
The Black alt. uni was for the Black out Meth game. The MSU Bobcats did their Black out game to open the season and U of Montana did their to end the season.
No, the black out Meth game was earlier in the year. They gave out wristbands. The Black Alternates were nothing more than appealing to the players who wanted an all black Uni for their final regular season home game.
They turned out horribly.
I wonder if all the evaluators knew that the dirt on the pants is not actually dirt but part of the design, would they change their mind?
Who wants their team to take the field looking like they just rolled around in a coal mine?
Just to clear a few things up from reading these posts. The school colors are maroon and silver and the colors used to be Copper and Gold. The copper was a Texas orange and never black and copper. The whole time I was a kid they were copper and gold up until 1996 when they went back to maroon and silver. Personally I wasn't impressed with the uniform they came out wearing last year, but I hope they never touch the Griz logo on the side of the helmet, its their trademark
To be accurate, the SCHOOL colors still are technically copper and gold which is a nod to the mining history of Montana. It wasn't the school colors that were changed, but rather the TEAM colors that were switched to maroon and silver. Confusing? Sure it is. But go to any graduation ceremony on campus and the colors (tassels, announcements, programs, etc.) are all in the original colors.
How exactly does two A- grades, a B+, and a D equate to an average of A-?
