Rate That Uni: Weber State

Traveling south from Pocatello to Ogden, we look at the threads of the Weber State Wildcats. Not too long ago, Weber State sported a purple-people-eater-type look with an all-purple home set. This has since changed. Did they make good changes? Read our thoughts and cast your vote.

Zach: I miss the days of the Jamie Martin "Arrow W" helmet. Those things were classic. The logo on the current helmet disappears behind the purple colored helmet. I don't think the uniforms are bad, although I think the bolder and italicizes numerals look like a 11 year old kid created them on NCAA 2012. The stripes on the ribs and pants are an overage not needed. I think the uniform would be terrific if simply the top shoulder sleeves were left alone. Love the nameplate across the chest. All in all, not a bad effort from the Wildcats. (Full Disclosure: I hold a BS from Weber State University)

Brett: Oh Weber State, my beloved alma mater. How you come so close yet fall short. Purple and black is so easy, but you are still slightly boring. But, Weber State did use an all-purple set recently, so the move back to black is good (which is a school color). The helmet logo is extremely weak. The Wildcats have a secondary paw logo (at the top of this post) that would look great here. Both uni sets look good, my only knock is the number font and shadow. Looks a bit cheap. Upgrade the number font and shadow (and helmet logo) and you are set.

John: No offense to the Weber State alumni at The Upset Blog, but these are some pretty poorly designed uniforms. Set aside the funky number font with the drop shadow. Black tops with black pants never look good. A purple top would look so much better, no?  Or purple pants with the black top, like the old Northwestern uniforms?  And I really hate the purple pointy stripes on the pants  The logo is a little busy, but I actually like the helmet. Just fix the pant situation, and Weber State could look decent.

Are we only talking football here? You do realize there are other sports in the NCAA, right?

Where's the Eastern Washington rate that uni? Some great combinations there......2 different home uniforms, the red on red look and the black on black.

Anonymous - Eastern Washington is due up tomorrow.

Nate - Yes, this is a series of rating uniforms we have been running for a couple months for Pac12, MWC, WAC, and Big Sky. Football is the next major sport to begin. We also cover men's college basketball for these conferences and the WCC.

a. Black is NOT an official school color of Weber State.

b. Going back to all purple would be a better move. Be proud of your colors. Could be worse...ever been to Laramie?

c. Helmet logo would look a little better if "weber state" was removed from the top of the logo. It is unnecessary.

d. Do you remember the white helmet? New helmet is great improvement. Nothing worse than a white helmet in football.

Black for black's sake is just awful. I personally believe Weber should make the paw alternate logo (shown at the top of the post, and used both on the men's basketball shorts and as the primary logo of the softball team) as the primary logo. As far as the football uni's go a two tone purple and white "traditional" look with purple tops/ white bottoms @ home, and white tops/purple bottoms on the road. Lose the stupid drop shadow and return to block numbers. I personally like a white helmet, but would not be disappointed if it were to remain purple. Overall, just ditch the black and the "shield" logo, they are both awful.

The "Cat in Shield" logo does not work for the football helmets. No one in the stands, or even watching on t-v can tell what it is. In fact it looks like some sort of test pattern. The helmets are like billboards for Weber...and effective billboards have an effective message that's easily seen and understood in an instance. A big block "W"...or a large "W" with Weber spelled out would be better. Even the "W" within a shield would work better. Simply put the "Cat & Shield" logo is far to intricate. It works on letterhead or a poster that someone can walk up to and see. But from a distance, the current logo on the helmets simply doesn't work...never has...never will. By the way, I love the all purple helmets. And I agree with purple jersies, white pants at home...the opposite on the road. And for the love of GOD, can we go back to the big block numbers on the jersies so people can tell who's playing? Substance sometimes wins out over style! By the way, the Paw logo is also difficult to figure out and does not instantly tell someone who we are.

Black may or may not be an "official" school color, but has been used plenty in sports uniforms as an official sports color, if that makes sense. (Like the late-90s basketball uniforms)

It seems most people agree that the cat-in-shield logo doesn't work so well for a helmet. We do know that Weber is working on a new sports logo. Hopefully they hit a home run with that and it's something that can be used to brand Weber State sports across the board.

Good uniforms offset by a not so good helmet design. I still don't get why John hates black so much, clearly he is racist ;-)

Black just isn't legit as it is not one of our school colors.

But please do not ever use the bookstore's WSU logo. It is not the official logo of Weber State University.

I like they went back to purple helmets. The White helmets were awful! The logo on the helmets does not work. I still love the arrowed-W helmets from the days of my youth. Those were great helmets. Other than that I think like others the number font could be improved. But as far as the helmets please go back to the arrowed-W! I'm not so sure about the paw logo...
