In the spirit of our blog name, a friday question for all of you: What was the biggest upset in college football during the last decade? I submit two candidates: Stanford over USC in 2007, or Appalachian State over Michigan from 2007.
Stanford 24 - (3)USC 23 - October 6, 2007
The Cardinal were 41 point underdogs. USC had won two of the last three national championships, and been to a third championship game. The Trojans had a 35 game home winning streak, a 24 game Pac-10 winning streak, and had five consecutive Top 5 finishes. Amazingly, Stanford converted two 4th Downs on the final drive, including a TD pass with just 49 seconds remaining. It was a sign that the Cardinal were ready to compete under Jim Harbaugh. The Trojans finished with 10 wins, yet another Pac-10 Title, Top 3 finish, and Rose Bowl victory.
Touchdown USC! Errrrrr Stanford!
Appalachian State 34 - (5)Michigan 32 - September 1, 2007
Perhaps the most recognized upset in college football history. Appalachian State, multiple FCS champion, shocked the world, defeating the pre-Rich Rodriguez Michigan Wolverines at the Big House. Armanti Edwards made play after play, leading the Mountaineers to a 28-14 lead with 2:15 left in the second quarter. They continued to lead by double digits midway through the third quarter. Trailing by one-point, Edwards and Co. went on a drive for the ages, capped by a go-ahead FG with just 26 seconds left. It seemed that the impossible would happen. Then, somehow, Mario Manningham got behind the ASU secondary and put the Wolverines in a position to win the game with a last second field goal. We all know what happened next. BLOCKED!
So, which one was more shocking? Sure, Stanford is a BCS school with BCS talent, but can you really argue that the Cardinal were more talented than the Mountaineers? That being said, Stanford beat a better team in USC. Michigan would go on to beat Florida in the Capital One Bowl, winning nine games in 2007. USC, as mentioned finished in the Top 5.

is this even a question? App State over Michigan by far. As an FCS fan and a Griz player I can tell you any day a small time FCS can beat the big boys from the FBS is a great upset. just like we from Montana are going to do to Tennessee in Neyland Stadium.
I agree with Robert. I remember several years ago when Montana beat Idaho a couple of times. Montana was (and has been) one of the best FCS teams and Idaho was one of the worst, and it was still a pretty big win for the Grizzlies. Multiply that by 100 for App State and Michigan because it's not only and FBS win, it's a win over a team from an AQ conference and not only that, it's MICHIGAN, a team from the very upper crust of college football. No way an unlikely defeat of a conference foe can compare to that.
Gotta go with Appy State. Stanford, at least theoretically, can still recruit against USC. If someone has Appy State and Michigan as their final two, I think I know where they're going.
I'm trying to think of a good parallel the Stanford-USC game would be like this season in 2011... Vanderbilt upsetting #2 Alabama? Kansas beating #1 Oklahoma? Washington State beating #3 Oregon?
Absolutely Stanford over USC. Absolutely.
App St was FCS champions two years in a row. They were legit and that was reflected in the point spread.
Stanford was 1-11 and their starting QB was out with a seizure. 1st career start for the Stanford backup QB and it was on the road at the Coliseum. App St had no such adversity coming into their game. Michigan at home was nowhere near as daunting as USC was at home, given USC's 35 game win streak.
And let's not forget the caliber of the opponent - USC was higher ranked at the time of kickoff and ended up being much higher ranked than Michigan at the end of the season. In hindsight, Michigan was massively overrated.
It seems the comments here also fall victim to overrating Michigan. A 27 point spread vs a 41 point spread is the objective, quantifiable argument firmly in favor of Stanford being the greater underdog. Millions of dollars are on the Vegas line so I'll take that evidence over any armchair analysis from internet pundits.
