Best Season: 2001. The 11-3 Bulldogs beat Colorado, #10 Oregon State, and #23 Wisconsin to start the season, only to be derailed by Boise State and Hawaii.
The mustachioed Bulldog of the Valley made famous the phrase "play anyone, anytime, anywhere." Say what you want about Pat Hill -- that he'll "lose to anyone, anytime, anywhere" -- but the bottom line is Hill put Fresno on the map. Sure, in all his success and time, he never had anything like an undefeated season. This fact is magnified by Boise State's meteoric, swift rise within the same conference. But Hill believed in his players, and believed in challenging them with strong matchups and national travel. Unfortunately, Hill's undoing may have been his inability to win the conference separate from Fresno's tough non-conference scheduling. The Bulldogs won just one conference title in his 15 years, a three-way shared title in 1999. He leaves a legacy appreciated at the school of allowing and helping his athletes to succeed academically.
Official Departure: Fired.
Replacement: Tim DeRuyter. This will be the first head coaching gig for the former Air Force linebacker. DeRuyter was the defensive coordinator for Texas A&M for the past two seasons, taking a unit that was ranked 107th in total defense in 2009 and coaching them to 51st (2010) and 66th (2011) rankings in his two seasons there. Previously, he spent time as a defensive coach at Air Force, Ohio, Navy, and Nevada.

Best Season: 2008. The 6-6 Rams beat Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl.
It seems that Steve Fairchild fell short in many areas: recruiting, developing talent, and finding ways to win. The MWC's best freshman QB in 2010 regressed in 2011 (Pete Thomas), and the Rams posted their third-straight 3-9 season this year. Where the Lubick era fizzled out, the Fairchild era continued. The lone bright spot was the 7-6 year of 2008, which in retrospect seems to have happened largely on the talent of Gartrell Johnson and Dion Morton.
Official Departure: Fired.
Replacement: Jim McElwain, offensive coordinator at Alabama (2008-11). No record as head coach. McElwain has also been offensive coordinator at Montana State (1995-99) and Fresno State (2007).

Best Season: 2010. A star-studded offense led Hawai'i to a 10-4 record and a share of the WAC title.
The McMackin era at Hawai'i was pretty mediocre. After June Jones left the islands disgruntled with the Warriors' commitment to improving facilities, McMackin's teams went 7-7, 6-7, 10-4, and 6-7. This year's version of the Warriors missed on bowl eligibility with an inexplicable road loss to 2-10 UNLV. In 2010, Bryant Moniz threw to receivers Greg Salas (1,889 receiving yards), Kealoha Pilares (1,306 yards), and Royce Pollard (901 yards), and also had Alex Green (1,199 rushing yards) to which he could hand off -- all resulting in a 10-win season.
Official Departure: Retired.
Replacement: Norm Chow. The career-long offensive assistant has been heralded (most of the time) as one of the best coordinators in football. The long-time BYU assistant (1973-99, offensive coordinator from 1996-99) was also offensive coordinator for N.C. State, USC, and UCLA, as well as the Tennessee Titans. His 2011 stint as offensive coordinator for his alma mater, Utah, was relatively successful, helping an emaciated offense do just enough to be 7-5. In 38 years of college coaching, this will be his first head coaching job.

Locksley also was involved in a sexual harassment claim, reportedly punched and/or choked an assistant coach, and a teen/potential recruit was pulled over for driving under the influence in a car owned by Locksley the same night the Lobos lost to Sam Houston State at home. The two wins in the Locksley era came in separate years, both over 3-9 conference foes.

Replacement: Bob Davie -- 35-25 (.583) in five seasons at Notre Dame (1997-2001). Before his only stint as a head coach, Davie was a career-long defensive coach, serving as defensive coordinator at Tulane (1983-84), Texas A&M (1989-93), and Notre Dame (1994-96).
