Today on the radio, Utah State football coach Gary Anderson said that the school is getting new athletic logos and uniforms. Apparently, according to current- and former-journos
Kraig Williams and
Jared Eborn, this was widely known as a reveal is set to occur next Saturday at the Aggies' spring football game. With a tip from
a friend, I found these logos (below the jump). Is this what Aggie fans will see in a week?

| "Proposed Identity" |
 |
| "Proposed Icon" |
 |
| "Proposed Ligature" |
 |
| "Proposed Alternate Mark" |
 |
| "Proposed Secondary Mark" |
 |
| "Proposed Tertiary Mark" |
And finally, a shot with the logo on what appears to be the bottom of basketball shorts:
While it is awfully Texas-like, the bull icon alone would look pretty good on a helmet. If they wanted anything else on a helmet, I'd go with the USU-bull, as pictured at the bottom of the shorts.
Where do the logos come from? All images are from
http://www.barnesdesign.net/ and appear in a gallery named "Utah State Proposed Identity." These are created by Ben Barnes, a graduate of Utah State University who designed the logo for 2005 MLS Cup. He is also the creator of what you currently see in the endzones at Candlestick
for the San Francisco 49ers. Far from a "fan design," these are designs from a legit designer who, as far as I can find, has also done work for Real Salt Lake.
But are they the designs ultimately chosen by the university and its brand partner Nike? Mr. Eborn shared publicly on Twitter that to his knowledge, the President of the Nike Brand, Charles Denson (a Utah State graduate) is in the loop and being consulted on the new design. The description in
this YouTube video from Utah State to hype the release says "Utah State University Athletics will unveil a new logo developed by Nike." As far as I can tell, Mr. Barnes does not work for Nike.
So is this just one proposal or
the proposal? To be clear, I claim no personal knowledge if these are the new designs, and am hearing of other designs much different than this as well. So time will tell.

From the designer:
Not even close to what the new logos look like. This is a set that Ben Barnes designed and proposed a few years back and in all honesty, it looks better than what Nike has come up with but the new logos aren't even close to this.
ReplyDeleteCorrect. These are NOT the new logos. And this isn't like the Marlins coming out and saying they're not the new logos when they are. These are 100% NOT the logos. Post above has it right.
ReplyDeleteMan that Ben Barnes guy does amazing work! He should do all the logos. I know he has done a sweet job at RSL. I especially like his Jai-Rai logo!
ReplyDeleteI am not impressed with these logos. I wonder how these logos would look like on grey colored jersey uniforms. Anyway, I have a collection of jersey uniforms from other sports like football that I bought from the afl shop.
ReplyDeleteI am always fond of blue basketball shorts because it is my favorite color since I played for my school. That logo that they made looks awesome and it somewhat resembles my team.
