Now that it's apparent those will not be the new logos revealed next Saturday, I have come upon filings Utah State made with the Utah Trademark Manager in early March. There are no pictures, but yes, there are descriptions. So let's play the game again: according to the filings with the Utah Trademark Manager, what is in store for USU's reveal?
And to be clear, I have not seen the new logos. I do not claim that these are the logos. These are just interpretations or representations of text descriptions filed with the state.
FILING 1: 8258264-0190
DESCRIPTION:
"CAPPED "U" (BLOCK "U") WITH A "STATE" BANNER ACROSS IT"
What might this look like? Enlisting the help of @ArtDirectorBYU, this is a straightforward rendition that embodies the above description:
Might the banner be arched? A lot is left to the imagination with the scant description from the trademark office.
Since I can't really design anything, instead, I decided to play the game of ripoff. After all, the official description says BLOCK U. Sorry Utah.
Here's Utah + Mississippi State:
And here's Utah + Iowa State:
No doubt, Nike will have come up with some sort of word styling that is more unique. But this helps one picture what you might expect next Saturday.
DESCRIPTION:
"ALL CAPS (BLOCK) "UTAH STATE" WITH THE U & T CONNECTED IN "UTAH" AND THE T & E CONNECTED ON "STATE"
So maybe like this (again from @ArtDirectorBYU):
Again, the font will (should) appear somewhat unique, but that's the general idea.
Many other filings were placed, some from early March, and some as recent as two weeks ago:
A NEW BULL LOGO
"STYLIZED BULL ILLUSTRATION OF AGGIE BULL"
This could be anything really, so not worth it to take a shot at what "stylized bull" could mean. So expect yet another new iteration of the bull. But probably not as cool as what Ben Barnes did. (Just guessing.) And more:
"BULL WITH BELL AROUND NECK (STYLIZED TEXT WITH A STYLIZED IMAGE OF A BULL)"
BIG BLUE SECONDARY MASCOT LOGO (STYLIZED IMAGE OF BULL)
WORDMARKS
"STYLIZED TEXT "UTAH STATE" TEAM FONT PAIRED WITH "ATHLETICS"
ALL CAPS (BLOCK) "AGGIES"
WORDING AGGIES IN BLOCK FONT (STYLIZED TEXT)
SECONDARY AGGIES WORDMARK BOWED (STYLIZED TEXT)
WORDING "BIG BLUE" IN BLOCK TEXT (STYLIZED TEXT)
SECONDARY "UTAH STATE AGGIES" WORDMARK WITH DUST / SMOKE (STYLIZED TEXT WITH A STYLIZED IMAGE OF SMOKE)
Finally, some description! Beyond the U with State banner and the Utah State wordmark with U&T and T&E connected, this is the first real description of anything. So perhaps dust/smoke will be a theme used throughout the logos/wordmarks -- and perhaps on the uniforms as well. (This is Nike, remember.)
And finally, one likely to be used outside of athletics that was registered just two weeks ago:
DRAWING OF UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY OLD MAIN TOWER (STYLIZED IMAGE OF A TOWER)
So there you have it. Not a ton of insight, but some. The U with State banner is pretty clear. The bull could be a home run or a miss -- hopefully nothing like Houston put out with its new Cougar logo. Something I noticed that was absent from anything I could find: an A wordmark. The A is big at Utah State, so I wonder why there is nothing on any sort of "A" symbol.
Most everything else will be a matter of what font is used in wordmarks, and what other embellishments Nike used, such as the "dust" or "smoke."

The logo with the Dust/Smoke sounds a lot like a current logo that USU has.
ReplyDeleteIt does a little. But that filing was entered on April 9, and the trademark for the previous bull logo with the dust/smoke hasn't expired, I think.
ReplyDeleteDid you check the USPTO to see if anything has been filed?
