WAC's Greatest Hits

Mad props to @BadWillHunting for passing this along -- the WAC released this unintentional IN MEMORIAM just three weeks ago:

(Note the misspelling of Chris Petersen's name.)
More below the jump:

The WAC will reach its 50th birthday in 2 months, as 2012-13 will continue as scheduled with the current conference roster. But as of July 1, 2013, all that is left is Idaho and New Mexico State in football, and Denver, Seattle, and UT-Arlington in basketball. All are no doubt currently scrambling to find homes. As a review of the moves as we've chronicled recently:

Utah State and SJSU -> MWC
UTSA and Louisiana Tech -> C-USA
Texas State -> Sun Belt

If the WAC is truly dead, and can't salvage keeping non-football sports together either, then what would be the beloved Wacky WAC's best moments and best teams?

I've nominated the obvious choices below -- Leave us comments and give us the best teams and moments/games from WAC history.

BYU FOOTBALL 1984 - National Champions

UTAH BASKETBALL 1998 - Final 4 / National Runner-Up

What are your favorite WAC games, teams, or moments?

Gotta say that even as a BYU fan one of the all time classic WAC moments was the time Van Horn hit 2 last second shots in 2 days to win 2 games in the WAC hoops tourney.

Absolutely. 1997 WAC tourney. The second one was the one that made Majerus jump and fist pump like crazy.

Obviously, I'm a bit biased, but my favorite WAC moments were probably the 2000 football season and the 1998 Sun Bowl. Even though my Horned Frogs lost inexplicably at San Jose State, the former was one of TCU's earliest flirtations with college football fame. And in that Sun Bowl we beat Southern Cal. 'Nuff said.

An addendum to my comment above: Also the 1999 UTEP@TCU game, at which LaDainian Tomlinson just went nuts and gained like 400 yards in a total stomping of the Miners, setting an NCAA record that probably doesn't stand anymore.

Marshall Faulk, Ty Detmer and all those glorious 55-50 late night WAC football games in the late 80s/early 90s. Even now when a game gets crazy with offense, I think, "this is like a WAC game."

Best WAC game has to be Detmer's BYU beating #1 Miami.

Boise State/Nevada from 2010 is a close 2nd. That was still the WAC, right?

When I first moved to Tempe in 1973 (from California .... PAC 8 country), the final scores of the ASU games just amazed me. They would score 45-50 points a game ..... and allow nearly as many. LOL!

"Boise State/Nevada from 2010" Ooh, good one! I was traveling during that game and listened to it on satellite radio. Being a TCU fan, I just went nuts when Boise missed that last kick.

I also remember some random game in 2011 that had like 12+ turnovers and nearly as many lead changes. I'm thinking San Jose State-Hawaii, but I really don't quite recall. Anyone else remember?

yup, 2011 SJSU vs hawaii, 6 turnovers for each team. wouldnt call it a highlight for the WAC but an entertaining game nonetheless.

Thanks for the confirmation! Yeah, not really a best of, but really fun to watch in a train-wreck kinda way.
