The idea of FBS independence for Idaho seems like a program death sentence to me. The presumed conference homes for Idaho football are the Sun Belt, if interested, and the Big Sky. Keeping in mind travel costs it would take to live in the Sun Belt in all sports, plus adding in the impossibility of anyone in your conference ever traveling to Moscow ... I've got to say that the Big Sky makes a lot of sense for Idaho.

(I'm using Google Maps driving distances here. Though one of the better pastimes of conference realignment, I don't have time to research airports.)
Compare that to the Big Sky. The closest school? Eastern Washington, a nice 71 miles away. The furthest away is newly-added North Dakota at 1,276, which is still closer than the presumed-closest in the Sun Belt. Average travel distance (football schools included): 739 miles. Nice on your pocket book when you have to pay for travel for all your sports. Also nice when Montana and Eastern Washington fans buy tickets at Kibbie.
Taking it a step further, let's assume the Big Sky splits into two seven-team football divisions. There are many possibilities here, but for the sake of simplicity, a "Big Sky North" division of Eastern Washington, Portland State, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, and North Dakota could make sense. Average travel distance: 503 miles. Take out the jaunt to North Dakota, and the other five trips average just 348 miles!
The Big Sky is a natural fit for Idaho. The Vandals have simply not had enough success in FBS football for them to desperately hold on to it. It would be extremely hard to recruit in the Sun Belt (and especially as an Independent). Staying FBS appears to be mostly a point of pride. In my opinion, the sooner Idaho embraces the Big Sky, the better.
