Abdulsamad "Duce" Zaid is a 6'2" guard from Barstow Community College (AZ), and will have two seasons of eligibility at Weber State. Zaid averaged 17.4 PPG last season and appears to help Randy Rahe replace Lillard (as much as you can) with his ability to drive and create off the dribble. Wayne Bradford, a 6'3" left-handed guard from Sheridan College (WY), will have three seasons left to play. He adds a solid shooting stroke to the roster, posting a 49% FG ... 41% 3PT ... 91% FT as a freshman in Sheridan. (Here are highlights of Bradford as a senior in high school, #0 in white.)
The Zaid and Bradford signings will give Randy Rahe a bevy of options for the guard line. As I see it, he'll have five guards who can rotate at point or shooting guard in Scott Bamforth, Gelaun Wheelwright, Jordan Richardson, Zaid, and Bradford. Bamforth played point two seasons ago when Lillard was injured, and Wheelwright and Richardson both played some backup point guard last season.
That said, there will likely not be enough room for all of them yet, given that skilled wing Davion Berry is now eligible to play two seasons after being required to sit out last season, and Royce Williams could fill a wing/forward role as well. But the security that depth provides Weber should be key. Last season, Weber started as the deepest team in the Big Sky, but injuries to two starters (Kyle Bullinger and Frank Otis) and the backup center (James Hajek) took away some advantages Weber enjoyed.
Williams brings a little more size at 6'5", providing Randy Rahe some depth at forward with the graduations of Bullinger and Darin Mahoney. Williams will also have three years remaining, and averaged 11.7 points and 6.4 rebounds in his one year at NMMI.
